Home Buyers Like Earth-Friendly YardsWe see real estate trends all the time, but it looks like there may be one that's here to stay as everyone wants to make the planet a little greener.  Home buyers like earth-friendly yards.  They seem to be drawn to them.  Therefore, it's important in today's real estate market to keep up with trends if you want your home to stand out above the rest.

Even though money may still be tight for some homeowners, we are still seeing quite a few that are investing in the great outdoors.  So, here are some earth-friendly yard tips to help you have a beautiful, healthy landscape with fewer problems.

* Water deeply - It's a great choice to water deeply rather than to water frequently.  Most lawns will do very well with 15 to 20 minutes of watering, at least three times a week.  If you're looking for maximum efficiency, let the water seep in.  Water for 10 minutes, wait for 20 minutes and then come back and finish watering.

* Don't over water - Many people over water their lawns.  Use the deep water treatment method for best results.  If your grass doesn't spring back to life, then go ahead and add more water.  If you're watering five times a week, that may be too much.

* Get a sufficient coverage - Get any areas that your sprinkler does not get.  You will end up with dry or brown areas on your lawn.

* Try a lush look - When your grass is 3" tall, it will shade out those pesky weeds, which will deny them the sun they need to grow, so they won't take over your lawn.

* Give the soil breathing room - Aerate your lawn at least once a year.  The spring or fall are great times of the year.  Aerating the lawn will loosen the roots and let water and fertilizers penetrate the soil.

* Downsize your lawn - Less lawn always means less watering.  Border plants that are low-maintenance ground cover are the perfect option.

* Use natural fertilizers - Stop dumping chemical fertilizers onto your lawn.  One fertilizer with an organic compound in the early fall is all you will need.

* Keep your grass clippings - Instead of removing them, rake them over your lawn very gently.  They're rich in plant nutrients and they're free.

* Go natural - You can use insecticides with ingredients that include orange oil and vinegar or boiling water to kill weeds.

* Think about low-maintenance grass - Some low-maintenance grasses include buffalograss and fescues.  You can ask your local agriculture department which ones grow well in your region.  Low-maintenance grasses will thrive well with minimal water and mowing.

Homebuyers like natural, easy-to-maintain yards.  So, if you're using the earth-friendly method, let potential homebuyers know about.

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

Good info, although I do think there is a move away from heavily intensive lawn maintenance.    The soft footprint/green revolution is now mainstream, I think.
