A Trip in the Way Back Machine

FiligreeStately homeA fringe benefit of inspecting houses is all the cool stuff I get to see. For example this old house built in 1884. I think it still looks stately and grand looking over the main street where it was built 126 years ago. The house must have belonged to someone wealthy. It is fairly large with many high end features which are still in place today. Let me show you some of the fine accoutrements of this home.

First is some of the exceptional architectural detail on the exterior. These filigree type ornamental touches on the gables are really quite magnificent. The time and workmanship it would have taken to make these is a testament to the craftsman who built them.  HingeIn-spire-ing

The prominent tower at the front of the home is a design element from years gone by. Every spire like a Christmas tree needs a finishing touch on top. This tower is no exception. Once again craftsmanship from a by gone era that's awe in-spire-ing.

Moving to the inside you would not expect something as mundane as a door hinge to be decorative, but not only is this antique hinge beautiful it matches the exterior design.

As I said earlier this home was undoubtedly built for a prominent and well to do person back in the day.

Lastly is the marble fire place in the living room. This is simply an amazing piece of the home. Not to sound like a broken record, but craftsmanship here is to be admired.Fire place

Unfortunately I found this home, as I would have expected, to be in serious decline. It has been converted into a multi family dwelling, broken up into several small apartments. It is now become an "investment property". It seems a bit sad that all the effort once invested into building this house is now neglected and largely unappreciated.

That was a great tour Jim!  You are right about the breaking up into different apartments as being unfortunate.  That would cause a decline little by little, a location at a time.

Good morning Jim, that looks like a foreclosure I drove by in Danbury yesterday. The outside looks wonderful, I have no idea what is inside though.

Such a shame when a home like that is let go. I love antiques in case you don't know, LOL. Hope the new owners will take care of it.

They just don't make them like that anymore as is the case with so many things from years ago.   I am always amazed to see very old homes like this one.    I try to imagine who lived in and loved that house when it was new.

What a gorgeous property!  And such a shame that it has been carved up.  I have a 98 year old home -- and while it is a lot of work to keep it running, I'd never want anything else!

Jim, so many of those huge old houses get turned into multi-family or dormitory type houses----great frat or sorority houses

James, this is beside the point but quicker than emailing you. I have a new friend to add to the guest list for the next bbq. She has recently gained notoriety as the "Cleburne County Squirrel Slayer" elsewhere on AR. So set a spot at the table for her too please.

PS From time to time I get the urge to rehab a house like the one in your post until I come to my senses once again.

I forbit it!  I like having squirrels around, particularly Nutsy!

And my legs are not good, contrary to popular belief...

Very kindly,

James, love the old ones.  The inspections are usually a challenge and costly, the reports are long, but the houses are fun to do.

I have a 200 yr old county school house (of course it isn't a school anymore) that is now a rental house with the plumbing built onto the back of the building, coming up. 4 course brick the whole thing.  Can't wait.

Mr James,

That is a very sad story of decline and this vanishing Americana depressed me greatly.

Your tale brought a tear to my assistant's eye.

Jay, It has already had that effect.

Andrea, That is very likely the same house. The interior was not too bad, the major problems were in the basement.

Connie, I think that is part of the fun of looking at these old houses, imagining them being lived in at their prime.

Richard, Yours is a beauty!

Charlie, Yes they most certainly do and that's when they begin to be neglected.

Kate, You have to be a little senseless to take on a project of that magnitude. Btw the new squirrel slayer lady has a place of honor at the bbq table.

Croakster, We like Nutsy around too. Around the bbq spit.

Jack, You are right about the inspections being a challenge.

Nutsy, It is a sad tale indeed.

Steve, So I see.
