MUST SEE: The Big Mamou, Cajun Restaurant, Houston Heights 77008 (http://www.thebigmamou.com/)
The Big Mamou is a Cajun Restaurant right in the heart of the Houston Heights. Located on Studewood, The Big Mamou is a old bungalow that has been converted to a restaurant with two outdoor patios: one in the front and also in the rear. They serve authentic Cajun "comfort" food and have a Sunday brunch as well. (Comfort food? that is anything fried .. ;-)).
I discovered The Big Mamou about a year ago going to White Linen Night in the Heights, a post summer celebration. The owner Brenda was making a mean batch of hot fried dough and dowsing them with tons of powdered sugar. Ahhhh.. Beignets!!! I am SO excited. Since then, when I am in the mood for a bit of kick and comfort food, I head over to The Big Mamou.
Brenda and Rufus started The Big Mamou several years ago. They decided to take their love of cooking and Cajun food to the next level. Actually, Rufus was driving around and saw the building. Brenda is the main chef behind the food and makes some amazing gumbo, jambalaya, po-boys and yes .. beignets! They named restaurant The Big Mamou after a small town in Louisiana called Mamou. If you ever go there, Brenda says you must go to Fred's Lounge where it is a happening place and yes.. they know how to party!
OFFER: If you mention this blog, you get a free order of beignets (4 yummy squares of fried dough with tons of powdered sugar) with the purchase of a large drink.
