The phone Rings..."Helloo!"

"BILL, I Need help!  I have a monster in my yard!"

That is what the frantic voice on the other end yelled.  My caller ID let me know it was my 88 year old neighbor lady who still lives alone!  (If I can be that lucky at that age)

"A Monster?  What kind of monster", as my mind searched for what it could be.

"I Don't Know...But it is ugly.  I have never seen this thing before!"

Well, that got my curiosity up and I jumped into the car and down the road I went.  When I arrived, Jennie was waiting in the drive for me.  She led me out back and sure enough...A Prehistoric Monster was digging in her flower bed. (And Jennie was NONE to happy about it!)

This is what I saw...

Some call it Ugly, some call it Dangerous...I call it Delicious!  In common folk language it is a Snapping turtle.  Not really a monster, but they have been dated back to prehistoric times.

This bad boy will net about 13-15 pounds of great table fare...But, alas...Snapping Turtle season is not open.  This lady was digging in the garden to lay her eggs.  (That still didn't make it OK with Jennie).

So, I took the lady down the road to a spot near the river and a good sandy place where hopefully she will deposit her eggs and no predator will find them before they hatch.

But, come July...there will be no amnesty for her if I see her then!

Bill...

I found a snapping turtle this big a few years back. I also took her to a nice spot by the river where I hope that she survived and flourished.

Bill, don't you touch that turtle!  Think how old she is! (She's probably 88 like the neighbor) I can tell by the picture that she's a whopper.  At that size they can take a good sized chunk out of anything they get ahold of.  Let her alone and have some babies by the river.
