My First encounter with a Poisonous Snake!!!

Last weekend I was invited to a ranch north of The Woodlands / Houston area.   While driving along the country roads that would curve and wind I came across this HUGE POISONOUS SNAKE!!!!

water moccasion texas

I am from the Pacific NW where you don't grow up around these big, FAT snakes so I had to turn around and go back to look at this thing!

Here is a picture to give you an idea of the size of this snake (compared to the mailbox)texas poisonous snake ...

My husband assured me that this snake was more scared of me than I was of the snake so screaming like a little girl I got within 3 feet of this snake and took this picture as it kept coiling up .....

scary snake

Ok ...now looking back at the pictures, the snake looks a little more scared than I did!!!!!!

They may be afraid of us but I'm not getting close enough to find out. No screaming just leaving.

I guess, growing up in the country, snakes don't really bother me as much as most others.  Think you're ready for the Rattlesnake Roundup out in Sweetwater now?

School is never out for the Successful.

Its a much better that you didn't test the hypothesis of the snake being more scared than you. Scream, take a picture and run was the best solution. You're in Texas. This is sure to happen again.

Hey just fyi that is not a poisonous snake, it's a harmless Rat Snake.  It's acting like that (mouth open, etc.) because it's already been hit by a car and is likely dying.

That is not a poisonous snake.  I'm not sure what kind it is maybe a rat snake or king snake.  The tail is too slender as is the body.  The head is slender as well.  I have seen more than a few cottonmouths behind the house and copperheads.  this is not one of them.   It's still a nice looking snake nonetheless.  I stop for al lsnakes on the side of the road,  alive OR dead!
