A Feel-good San Carlos, California story for a Sunny Sunday

San Carlos, California, 97070, is a real down-home kind of place, located on the Peninsula in San Mateo County, mid-way between San Francisco and San Jose. The motto of our town is "The City of Good Living."

City of San Carlos, CA

Well, this story I came across today shows that is more than empty words--San Carlos really is the City of Good Living!

Last month a Good Samaritan found several $100 bills dancing along a downtown sidewalk, in the heart of our shopping area; looking further, he saw a whole stack of bills, totaling $2,000. He immediately took the money to the Police Department, where it was held for safekeeping.

Meanwhile, the woman who had withdrawn the cash from the local Wells Fargo Bank discovered a hole in her jacket pocket and the cash gone. After properly identifying herself, and with the assistance of the bank teller, the police were able to turn the money over to her. The thankful woman not only gave the finder some award, but made a donation to the police department's Juvenile Diversion Program. The police also acknowledged the Samaritan with their Citizen Appreciation Coin.

If you want to learn more about living on the Peninsula, log onto the Facebook page, Peninsula Living. San Carlos might just be the place you want to call home. Our real estate market is strong and active, and it's the people who help make it so great, not to mention the hiking, biking, trail running, schools, youth sports, rec center classes, concerts, farmers' markets, shops, libraries, etc.!

In our police department, Jane, money is held for a certain period (I don't remember if it's 3 months, or what) and then given to the person who found it if the former owner can't be found. Years ago my 8-year old daughter found $60 in the grocery store and turned it in. I was so proud of her-she never even thought about keeping it ('course I wouldn't have let her, but that didn't even come up.)

Hello Mary Kay - I'm glad you enjoyed this good news story. I had to smile when I walked past that Wells Fargo today and thought of this.

Hi Lottie -- with all the bad, rotten and just totally awful news we are bombarded with every day, these days, a good news item is very welcome indeed.  A neat story of good that points out that all is not bad.  I think all the news should at least begin and end with good news and we could do what we want in between.

Lottie --  San Carlos is indeed a great little town with lots of good people, and your story proves it.  I especially like the part about the woman making a donation to the police dept's youth program.  I lived in nearby Redwood City for a few years recently while working at Stanford Univ. and also went to high school at Notre Dame in Belmont.  Great area!

60 minutes or Dateline or one of those shows just did a feature on leaving a wallet at different places in New York City. Wallets was always returned when found on the Subway, but nor returned so much when found in the taxicab. Interesting.

Melissa, that's fascinating, but a bit disturbing. Do you think people act differently when surrounded by others than when alone? Thanks for the thought-provoking comment.
