Are You Outstanding in the Rain?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with American Foursquare Realty RM423982

Are you Outstanding in the Rain, or are you out standing in the rain?

Whether you are new to the real estate business, or have been around since the Louisiana Purchase was the talk of the industry, you must understand that the Internet is the driving force in our industry.

On-line multiple listing services, IDX feeds, agent web sites, property web sites, commercial amalgamators, real estate blogs, and so on, and so on.

And, of course, the #1 real estate blog site is ActiveRain.  That's why we're here.  With over 180,000 real estate professionals (and growing!) sharing knowledge.

So take some time to make sure you are Outstanding in the Rain, and not left out standing in the rain:

•·         Your blogging audience needs constant care and feeding - please blog on a regular schedule.  And by regular, I mean daily!

•·         People are visual.  Regardless of how good your blog is, unless there is something visual - a picture, drawing, word art - to draw the reader in, they might just overlook your post.

•·         Be original!  Don't just rehash other people's ideas.  And never plagiarize!  Nothing ruins a good reputation faster than being a copycat.

•·         Encourage participation!  Ask your readers a question in your post to get responses.

•·         While content is king, formatting counts, too.  A single block of dense words can be off-putting.  Use paragraphs!  Use bullets!  Insert pictures!

•·         Encourage peers and competitors alike to join the world's largest on-line gathering of real estate professionals.  Remember what your momma told you - sharing is good.

•·         Reach out to people whose posts you admireMargaret Rome called me the other day about a post I wrote.  It meant the world to me!  Never knew her before, but I do now!

•·         Leave comments on other people's posts!  Whether you agree with their ideas or disagree - it's that conversation that helps us all learn.  But stay away from "Good idea - thanks for posting!"  Comment spam stinks.

•·         Update your profile!  This is how your peers and potential clients will find out about you.  If your profile has the boilerplate "Use this section to write about yourself - don't be shy" - what does that tell people?

I could go on and on -- but that takes me to my final point.  Be brief.  Not so brief that you are not saying anything, but don't write a book, either!

And when in doubt, post pictures of your pets. People love that.  (that started out as sarcasm, but now that I think of it, some of the most commented on posts I've seen have been ones with pet pictures!).

So I challenge all of you!  Be Outstanding in the Rain -- or be left out standing in the rain.

Natasha, Gombe and Dekoe

Thanks for the great post Richard, it is hard to keep after, and it seems like that is one of the last things on our agenda is to keep our profile up to date as that is on the bottom of our priority list typically.

Ron - I like you Monarch butterfly!

Melissa - I'm still enjoying the spring!

Don - The profile can be a once and done thing (ok, periodic upkeep is necessary), but the blog posts are a daily must!

Steve - I agree.  If you get in the habit, it becomes second nature.

Richard - thanks for the feature!

Good advice.  I learned a lot from reading it.  I have come to enjoy looking for new material in my daily life.  It is fun using AR.

Great post - thanks for the cat pics!....just kidding

This is my 2nd day on AR and seriously, this is a really helpful post.

Rumor is, I put together the Louisiana Purchase which means, I was a little tired by the time the computer was invented and really tired by the time Al Gore came up with the internet.

I'm not quite sure who I'm reaching out to yet here on AR, attempting to start with fellow real estate professionals and go from there.  With this information and a little practice on these techniques, I feel certain I can master Active Rain.  I really like the part about engaging other people with questions.

Now, I just have to get up the never to write my first blog.

Richard:  This is an excellent post.  So much good advice, and so well presented.  But... regarding bullet-point # 3.  Doesn't posting pictures of Natasha, Gombo and Dekoe make you a TRIPLE "copycat" ?  :)

Richard:  What a mark of a pro.  Brown Land & Timber Company made a comment in # 15... and you took the time to go to his profile and find out his name... and THEN posted a comment back to him.  Very nice !  I know it's just a "little thing"... but little things can mean a lot... and names are very important.  Have a great weekend !

Karen Anne - Haha!  I can assure you there are no "copycats" there!  THey broke the molds of those three cats.  Natasha is my anorexic cat (all fur and bones).  Dekoe and Gombe are both deaf -- but Gombe is completely laid back, and Dekoe is a paranoid mess!

And thank you for your second comment.  I truly believe it's the little things that make the big things better.  That, plus I find it a bit rude to go, "Yo, Brown Land & Timber!"  By the way, since Jim is new, we should all help him get up to speed in the Rain!
