Ganges Village is named after the HMS Ganges, flagship of Rear Admiral Robert Baynes. John Fulford was the Captain.
This is the charming seaside village that is the shopping core of Salt Spring Island. The floatplanes land at the dock in the background, and the shops, banks, restaurants, galleries, cluster around the shoreline, with two marinas on one "boundary" (can just see a part of the Ganges Marina at left of photo).
The Islands Trust, our form of government on the Canadian Gulf Islands, capped growth to preserve the environmental beauties of these islands, for the benefit of all B.C. residents. On Salt Spring, then, Ganges Village cannot expand its boundaries, and so the main commercial enterprises are all clustered in this one location.
Whether you arrive by boat, or ferry, or floatplane, this is a gem of a place to visit, and, if possible to call home (perhaps, to start with, only seasonally?).
Today is the May 24th Victoria Day holiday, and it's been busy on Salt Spring all weekend...sailboat racing, soccer tourney, markets, gallery openings, live music venues...if you're around this evening, catch the homage to Bob Dylan, at Treehouse Cafe. It's to celebrate his music and his birthday, which is today.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend holiday!
