In the world of SEO titles are one of the first item read by a search engine (SE) and human readers. Titles need to describe the blog, be short & sweet and should encompass the key words and phrases that are most important.

There are many so many blog on the internet these days, 75,000 new blogs added per day (Mary's calculation), and categorizing blogs and their topics is becoming a difficult task for SEs, blog aggregators and webmasters. We can all see the development of the categorization features added to ActiveRain blogs to help facilitate this whole process. So here is what I think is important when it comes to titles.

The Don'ts of Titles

  1. Don't use to many characters
  2. Don't make them sentences
  3. Don't use to many symbols
  4. Don't deviate to far from the main topic

The Dos: 5 Elements to an Effective Title

  1. Key phrase emphasized - Use the most important blog phrase in the title.
  2. Short & sweet - Keep it direct and to the point.
  3. Target the main blog topic.
  4. Variety from one blog to the next
  5. Catchiness - Mary suggested this one on her most recent blog, Top 5 secrets of successful blogs and how yours can be one of them.

In the title you want to tell people, SE's and aggregators why your blog should be read and featured over others. Titles that are lengthy and hard to categorize get pushed to the side and as a result don't get the traffic of a descriptive and simple title.

The blog has to be well written as well but if the title is full unnecessary information then the blog will never reach its audience and therefore never receive much benefit.

And don't forget to tag them correctly. Less is more. Too many tags may confuse/alienate se's, better to have just a few focused tags that a bunch of mildly related ones. -Charles

Wow, I will have to thank Jeff for the link love :)

Michelle & Meli, Don't forget to venture outside the box as well.  Since this post I've been working on my titles, sometimes they are longer and sometimes they're are shorter. For me it all depends on what the topic is and what would be the best use of keywords. Thanks for visiting :)
