I think coaches can be very helpful but can also be a big financial drain. A coach is a disinterested party who can hold you accountable. The best bet is to find someone who can fill that role and doesn't charge for it! Sometimes you can find a peer and the two of you can hold each other accountable.
If you're hoping a coach will provide motivation, I believe that comes from inside you and doubt any coach can give you that. That may be why you don't hear as much after the first few months. The newness wears off and they realize they still have to do the work! Coaches can be great cheerleaders and can give you valuable insight, but you have to go out and execute!
