Splash around in the 'Pool Safely'

The weather has been beautiful lately, but we all know those temps will be rising soon.

And what better way to cool down than jumping in a pool? But remember to be safe!Follow the rules!

The national campaign Pool Safely launched yesterday (Monday, May 24). This campaign aims to reduce child drownings and entrapments as well as change the way people think and act about pool and spa safety. This is "first-of-its-kind" national effort not only educates, but informs the public about how many drownings and entrapments incidents occur annually.

Here are the stats provided by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

2005 - 2007 Pool & Spa-Related Drownings
Children younger than 15: 385
Children younger than 5: 299 (of 385 total)
74% of the fatalities occured at a residence (of children under 15)

2007 - 2009 Pool/Spa Emergency Department-Treated Submersions
Children younger than 15: 4,200
Children ages 12 to 35 months: 47% of 4,200
54% of the estimated injuries occured at a residence

Other Facts from CPSC:

  • Most reported fatalities (73%) occured on the day of or within a week of (23%) the submersion incident.
  • 4% of fatal victims survived beyond a week of the submersion and had severe injuries and required intensive medical care.
  • No reported entrapment fatalities were reported for 2009.
  • CPSC received 8 reports of entrapment incidencts in which 7 people were injured during 2009.

Pool Safety Tips:

  • Place physical barriers completely around the pool to prevent drownings. Fences and walls should be at least 4-feet high.

  • Closely supervise young children! Never take your eyes off them; not even for a second.
  • Never use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision.
  • Keep a phone and rescue equipment next to the pool
  • LEARN CPR.
  • Gates (around the pool) should be self-closing and self-latching and out of reach from children.
  • For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured or removed when the pool is not in use.
  • And, if a child is missing, always look in the pool FIRST!

Hi Anna.  Pools aren't as popular here, perhaps because we live on an island surrounded by ocean.  Safety rules apply to both and it is most unfortunate that we have multiple drownings each and every year here on our little island.

I think it's very interesting that there were no entrapment related deaths reported for 2009.  There was a law that went into effect at the end of 2008 that mandated a very expensive retrofit for all 'commercial' pools for anti-entrapment devices.  I've heard that compliance with the law was minimal because these types of accidents are apparently quite rare.

Richard - it breaks my heart every time I hear of another drowing here in Phoenix. I can't imagine the nitemare.  In just a few short seconds kids somehow figure out how to get into pools.

Michael - Yes I remember hearing all about that terrible problem.   I haven't heard much about it as well and I too understand that not many pools made the fix.  I think with the huge number of private pools we have here in the valley we hear more about children dying in the family pool.

Such an important post!  There are always so many tragedies every year with children falling into family pools.  You can never be too careful.

Hi Debra - that is for sure - one can never be too careful. I try to get as much as info out every year to our client base. All the TV stations always say  Remember to'Watch Your Kids Around Water".....but evey year there are kids that are lost.  Sad.

Thank you Anna, This is timely information as public pools begin to open and homeowners get their pools ready for summer play. As parent's we MUST ALWAYS keep our eyes trained on our small ones when anywhere near the pool. And this may very well save lives!

Anna Banana, I just read this to my daughter, she has an infant, and we have the 2.5 yr old that is my other daughters. There is an above ground pool here. After reading this we talked about taking the boys for swimming lessons.

Thank you, very important information to remember.

Pool safety is a must.  Friends try to bring their kids to my pool parties, and the rule is simple - no.  I do not want any kids around my pool, because you never know what will happen when the adults are having fun and not paying attention.

HI Wanda - I sure hope it saves little ones.  If we all write about pool safety over and over it does a lot of good for our communities.

Andrea - absoutely give them swimming lessons and even with that kids can get themselves in a bad place.   Do you have the pool covered and locked? That might be a good idea.  People forget about spa's too - they should be child- safe as well.

HI Aaron - we too have a pool but we always welcome the kids even at parties.  There are always several adults that are on pool watch - and we take that very serioulsy.

Great tips.  Most pool accidents happen on the outside of the pool and could easlily be avoided.

Pool safety is critical. Every time I show houses with buyers who have small children I mention these types of stats.

Anna, thanks for a very valuable post which is worthy of a re-blog.

William - I remember that in MN - always being told to slow down on the pool deck.  Here in Phoenix it's a differnet scenario.  Not a good think - most kids end up drowning or are seriously injured

Fernando -thanks.  I feel it is SOOOOO important, espeically in areas that have many pools to get the word out there and keep it front and center.

Gabe - yes it does.  Spread the word & Thanks!

Gary - same here.  Here in Phoenix there are many laws in place to protect kids.  Even with that accidents happen.

Derenda - please do re-blog and keep spreading the word.  This weeekend is the kick off for pool season and it is extremely important.

I was just about to do a blog on the same subject at my home inspector profile. I think I'll just reblog you since yours is so nice, and then I can go play with Zoey the Cool Cat instead of writing a blog post. LOL

Wonderful suggestions, Anna.  Children can get away from parents so quickly.  One drowning is too many.

Pam - yes they do and they're so creative on getting over pool fences. All is takes is a minute or two....

Anna--thanks for this post. I have two 4 year olds..and when we are at the pool..I can't rest or turn my back for a second! It amazes me sometimes when I see parents of little ones..that don't watch them closely--even if they can swim.
