Watch Out For The Florida Alligators Mating Season Is Here!

By
Home Inspector with Cape Coral Florida

It's that time of year again. May begins the start of the Florida Alligator mating season. There are over 1 million alligators in Florida according the the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

According to the Florida Wildlife Conservation, during this time of year Floridian's are 3 times more likely to encounter a Florida Gator. They are busy looking for food, a mate and females are searching for a place to build a nest.

Floridian's should be mindful to check their pools and underneath their cars. Also when walking your dogs keep them on a short leash and away from fresh waters. Always be aware of your surroundings especially along fresh waters. Remember, never feed or taunt a Florida Alligator. Never swim in unfamiliar waters including ponds, canals, and lakes.

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation has a dedicated hotline. If you encounter a gator call 866-FWC-GATOR to have the Florida Alligator safely removed.

I did not take the picture below, and there's been discussion for years whether this picture is real. While we do have gators this large in Florida, I've never seen one come right up to the front door, I've seen them close to and in the beautiful Cape Coral canals and also in and around swimming pools...so I find the picture suspicious.....but, I include this picture because I just plain like it!

You are right about Gators. I used to (inadvertently) run over them when water skiing on some of the inland lakes. It is a wonder more folks aren't attacked...

I'd certainly look through that side window before opening that door.  Thanks for my newly acquired phobia!
