More improper chimney cap installations

By
Home Inspector with Ryan and Son Chimneys Contractors LLC

It is amazing how frequent I see these installs in the field.  This application is only adding to water entry into the chimney systems.  The middle cap washes into the 2 other flues in thi system.  Inaddition, the caps have been altered to fit.

The proper installation of a chimney cap here would be a single cap to cover all three flues.

If it looks off to you as a consumer, homeowner , inspector or real estate professional, then raise the question!!

Great post!   I agree that there are a lot of messed up chimney caps!

Chimney caps are not something I see often, but they're something my home-inspectors always check.  Most homebuyers aren't going to know what to look for, so thank goodness for homeinspectors!

Hi William, I inspected a home a couple weeks ago, the chimney cap looked similar to yours. The installer (I assume a do-it-yourselfer) left a couple of beer bottles on the roof! I had a good chuckle! jay
