Memorial Day weekend brings many events and parades to the Northwest Suburbs of Illinois. In particular Vernon Hills brings an added special event for Memorial Day Weekend.

The Cuneo Museum in Vernon Hills is having their annual Cuneo Gardens Summer Arts Festival, May 29 and May 30, 2010 from 10am to 5pm.

Cuneo Museum Garden Vernon Hills

The Cuneo Garden Summer Arts Festival offers a great park setting surrounded by a historic museum and a gorgeous sculpture garden. You and your family can enjoy fine arts and crafts while walking through the grassy knoll. The springtime outdoors festival features arts including paintings, ceramics, sculptures, jewelry and so much more. There is musical entertainment in a beautiful garden setting featuring local bands and the admission is FREE, parking is $5.00. This is a great event for family fun in Vernon Hills. While parents enjoy the fine arts offered and the lush gardens, kids can dance around to the live entertainment.

Cuneo Museum Statue Vernon Hills

The Cuneo Museum has been a part of Vernon Hills history since 1908. Construction began in the early 1900’s and stopped during World War I. The Cuneo Mansion and Gardens was completed in 1918. The original owner of the home and gardens was Samuel Insull the original founder of General Electrics Company. The designer of the home was a local Chicago architect Benjamin Marshall. The landscaping and gardens were designed by Jens Jensen. The Vernon Hills home was purchased by John Cuneo in 1937 for himself, his wife and two children. John Cuneo was a successful business man owning businesses including Hawthorn Mellody Farms Dairy, the National Tea Company, and the Cuneo Press. The property opened up to the public in 1991 and features the Cuneo family collection of fine antiques, paintings by world-famous artists, tapestries, sculptures, silver, and porcelain. In 2009 John Cuneo Jr. gave the 100 acre estate to Loyola University Chicago. The $50 million dollar gift including all of furnishing and art from the Cuneo Foundation is the largest donation ever given to Loyola University.

Cuneo Museum GardenIf you live in Vernon Hills or the surrounding Northwest Suburbs of Illinois, the Cuneo Museum is a great place to visit and take in all of the fabulous history. It truly is a gemstone tucked away in Vernon Hills. Guided tours of the Cuneo Mansion & Gardens are offered on Friday, Saturday & Sunday at 11:30AM, 1:00PM and 2:30PM. The Cuneo Gardens are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00AM – 3:00PM. You can also schedule private tours for parties of 15 or more.
