Which Way Is North?

Have you ever been so turned around when showing property, you lose track of your orientation?

I had to dig this out of memory last week when my customer wanted to know what direction a particular mountain was in.

Which Way Is NorthUsing an analog watch, or if you aren't wearing one, draw one on paper; and you can tell in a hurry.

Hold your watch with the hour hand pointing to the sun.  Remember that if it's daylight saving time to correct to real time (one hour back from where it points). 

Halfway between the hour it is at, and twelve o'clock will be due South.

This method works well even on a foggy day (Northern hemisphere only).

Hi Gary -- that's a great solution for determining which direction you are facing.  I seem to never know which directon a room is facing when out of the blue someone asks if the sun will hit in the morning or later in the day.  I now carry a compass which I just quickly point and show!

What works even better is a compass. I always carry one in my car. Many buyers in our community want to know what direction the house faces.

These days, many of us have cars which have GPS. You can use your car as a compass of sorts.

My associate has a compass app on his iPhone. I am looking for the Android app for my phone.

Gary - I have not worn a watch for years but my new droid has an app for that ..... I find it very useful when showing property and you get asked the question ..... which way is north?
