San Diego maintains its rank as one of the nation's safest large cities

The FBI's report on violent crime and property crime shows that there was a nationwide drop in crime in 2009.

Of course, that doesn't mean much if you were one of the crime victims.

Cities were ranked by number of crimes per 1,000 people.

San Diego reported 5,931 violent crimes, down from 6,047 in 2008. That ranked third behind Honolulu and San Jose, the same as in 2008.

San Diego reported 32,246 crimes, down from 40,365 in 2008. That ranked fourth behind New York (142,000),
Los Angeles (85,670), and San Jose (22,755). New York and Los Angeles surprised me, so I have to remember that we're talking crimes per 1,000 people, another reason why it's really important to dig deeper into these types of stories, much deeper than the headline.
