Need some more dough?

I did, so here's how I got it I signed up for Russell's Bread Baking Class!

Russell talks bread

Russell's Breads are available at select farmers markets in our area and during the week if you sign up for his emails. That's how I learned about the class he was giving. So, me and 7 other lucky people got to spend an afternoon with Russell and Lisa (of LCC fame).

Bread Essentials

Russell bakes in a wood-fired brick oven. He showed us the difference it makes by cooking a couple of our loaves from the class in a standard electric oven. I'm a convert! The brick and wood makes such a nice difference in the color and texture.

In our class, we started the dough forming and kneading from dough he'd already prepared. The bread we made is known as "naan". While that cooked and cooled, we mixed up our own dough to take home and cook.

Russell and Lisa provided samples of different bread types. It was interesting to see, and fun to taste, the results of the different flours (hard, soft, rye) and the bread textures.

I like the idea of "breaking bread together" as some symbol of friendship, and making bread together and then breaking it with my fellow cooks was very special.

Love the smell and taste of homemade bread. Not many things are actually handmade anymore. Good post Lynn.

Love making my own bread, but use a bread machine frequently . . . hmmm maybe a brick oven is what we need?  What great fun!  What type are you making first?

Randy, The smell and taste of the bread are wonderful inducements to make bread.  The process is very comforting too; something soothing about kneading and handling the dough.

Margaret, the brick oven cooking is amazing.  I learned in the class that in earlier times of civilization, the villages usually had one or two bakers that had ovens and the village women would bring their dough to the baker for baking.  I am  particularly interested in sourdough breads.  Brought home some sourdough starter from the class in fact.

Our family has been making its own bread for years and there certainly is something about fresh warm bread straight out of the over. Now my parents have a wood stove and from time to time we do go over and use it, because you are right, it makes it taste that much better!

Lynn - You never cease to amaze me! The motorcyle? The beer? and now home made bread?

I have wanted to build a woodburning oven ever since my early trips down into Mexico. The people dow thare are very resourceful and it is incredible to see what they can bake in them.

Mark, One of the benefits of getting old is the accumulation of opportunity!  And I understand what you're saying about resourcefulness of people, especially working ideas over the generations.
