HOW CAN I SAVE ON GAS

GOING GREEN IN SHELL KNOB, MISSOURI

I needed a key to show a Shell Knob home last week, and found out the listing agent was in the neighborhood, so he would do the courtesy of dropping it off to me, saving my gas and a half hour drive.

He pulled up with a roar on his motorcycle, and I'm sure  he must save on gas, but I couldn't quite picture taking a client out on it.

I believe in being as "Green" as the next guy.  In fact, now that I think about it, I've been recycling before it was THE thing to do.  Recycled the older kids' clothes to the next youngest.  Recycled last nights supper into tonight's leftovers.  Got on the Thrift Shop's Favorite Customer list.

At today's fuel prices, I don't need much encouragement to want to save gas, but a recent article in my Rural Electric magazine might be taking it too far.

"Electric- powered scooters are a great way for grown-ups to get around.  Hopping on a scooter to run local errands is cheaper than gassing up the car for short trips," the article says.  "Easy to operate electric scoots have become favorites with elderly.....the devices run for about 35 minutes per charge, depending on engine size, and can travel at speeds from zero to around 20 miles per hour."

I can see it now - Sorry Mr. Jones, I cannot show you that house until my scooter recharges......or........ "Hang on Mary, 20 mph is a bit fast around this next curve".

No, guess scooters and motorcycles aren't for me, but they sure look like fun.

Joan, nice post.  The scooters are fun -- my sister has one for zipping around San Francisco.  But they are definitely not for taking clients around.  But, no need for a Hummer either.  What about a bicycle made for two with your client pedaling in the rear?

Hey Lane:

That Cruiser looks pretty sharp - maybe you need a side-car for your wife. I just wish I had my diesel Rabbit back.  It got over 50 mpg.- of course, it couldn't go up hills worth a darn, but the mileage was great!

Good suggestion, but most of my retirees  wouldn't like pedaling up these Ozark hills!

Like you, I just don't like spending money and that means that we have been recycling for years.  I am on my 5th Subaru sedan that gets 28 to 30 mpg.  Who needs a  gas guzzling SUV?  Not me!

If I can talk my wife into a bigger garage, I'll start brewing my own bio-diesel.  My truck gets about 16 mpg, but I can run converted fry oil... and the exhaust will smell like french fries... really.

But I still want the bike.   I think my wife would rather I NOT have a sidecar.  that would give her an excuse to not go.

I've had two Suburu's.  Encountered a deer on the 2nd one.  Heck - it only had 300,000 miles on it!

That conversion can be great, I understand.  Our pharmacist here in town has converted a Mecedess.i  Doing well I guess.
