EVENT: Volunteering, working in the community at Brookwood, Keller Williams Red Day
Working in the community is definitely a rewarding experience. Keller Williams Realty International has an official day mandated "Red Day" where we wear our colors (Red) and volunteer in our immediate community. This year we setup time to work and to play at a community designed to help educate, to provide a positive life experience and also to teach entrepreneurial spirit to intellectually challenged adults.
About 30 minutes outside of Katy heading west on I-10, Brookwood Community is dedicated to the care of adults with special needs. There are two campuses. The first is primarily a gift shop, a large outdoor flower/plant shop and has a main cafeteria. The main lobby greets visitors with a large display of ceramic and wood crafts made by many of the residents. There is a fully stocked high class restaurant/cafeteria to the right. To the immediately left is the campus store where there are more and more crafts, gift items, unique household accessories. In the rear of the building is a large covered area where you can purchase potted plants, flowers and bushes. Amazing.
I made my way to the second building which is a 5 min car drive further South. The main structure is a meeting hall and connects to the resident's dorms and cafeteria. Our large group of agents interacted with a few of the residents and sat down to paint ceramic pieces. "Joe" (no relation) was our greeter and immediately handed me a donation envelope. He proceeded to ask me that I needed to give money so that he could live and work there. He did that with a great big smile. How could I say no? Who would decline this 52 year old man who displays passion without reserve?
