UCSCTo continue my journey through the communities of Santa Cruz County I want to talk about an area which was first established as a logging camp, lies up in the redwoods, and has no city centers or malls. Bonny Doon has been a homestead for residents who enjoy the outdoors and privacy the community has to offer while still keeping the Santa Cruz vibe. Its forested location is well situated with the beach only a short drive away while encompassing a simpler more spacious lifestyle.

Bonny Doon is home to many artists, entrepreneurs, musicians and craftsmen inspiring a unique and creative vibe. The community holds a market called Saturdoon in which Bonny Doon locals can set up booths and sell their artwork, food, and entertain etc. Its a great event which really brings the community together and inspires the entrepreneurial spirit. As this area is less developed it allows for more local farming. The Bonny Doon Lavender Farm has been in Bonny Doon since 1972 and its products can be found in miscellaneous shops throughout the county. There is also the Bonny Doon Vineyard where the grapes are grown for that wine you tasted in the Swift Street Courtyard. The Bonny Doon Ecological reserve provides for awesome hiking. The reserve protects rare and endangered species of an area known as the Sandhills. It was closed a while back due to a devastating fire but has reopened to hikers, so go check it out! Another interesting attraction to note is the Bonny Doon Airport. The airport was originally owned by an individual who wanted a runway for his private plane. During World War II it was used as an emergency landing spot for coastal patrols and recently was a staging area during the fire that ripped through the reserve . It's a rich piece of Bonny Doon History. Even though Bonny Doon is situated up in the redwoods and spills over into Felton and Ben Lomond, it is not far from some prestine beaches. Heading up Highway 1 is a beautiful drive and will take you toward 4 mile, Waddell Creek, and Davenport Landing. You can also always head into town to the many beaches and surfspots Santa Cruz has to offer.

Just down the Empire Grade is the University of California Santa Cruz campus. The university is a center for both undergrad and graduate study. UCSC is also a leading research institution with groundbreaking discoveries in biomedical science, engineering, and many other fields. Connected to the campus is a great day hike spot, Pogonip, which has trails to lime kilns, a koi pond, and the historic Pogonip Clubhouse. Its a great short hike through the redwoods with lots of scenery.

Bonny Doon is a perfect blend of forested simple living and beach community. It is yet another piece to Santa Cruz County which gives it its character.
