Seal The Deal !

My over 1000 mile round trip over that last 4 days taking in and re-discovering California's Central Coast through my new eyes, my camera lens, brought me to these two seals found out in the waters outside the Seal Rookery at Piedras Blancas Preserve Beach near San Simeon.  This protected beach ( Marine Mammal Protection Act) is home to well over 10,000 seals that come ashore twice a year to give birth, breed, and to molt. Having observed and listened to these two seals argue over territory, I wanted to bring them back to share with you.

Hello Margaret W., I took over 1500 photos so I can assure you by the time I am done, I will sound like an advocate for this Cental Coastline journey. Breathtaking experience.

Hi Margaret Rome, Thank you for your wonderful Phone message. And you are indeed welcome. I am sure you would have or already did think of the title, :-) I was delighted to see the spotlight on you and the wonderful job you did with it.

I do have a lot to share here and will try and remember that my excitement to share all the wonderful photos of this journey has to be tempered with some good real estate information as well, :-).

Hi Missy, I had intended to do that and realized that I haven't done so but need to. With my efforts to capture the beauty and the treasures of San Diego ( an awesome amount of material) and my trips to some of the most scenic sights I have ever seen in my lifetime, it could certainly be useful. Thank you for the reminder. Lots of things coming forward in the weeks ahead. Some of the photos are so amazing, I can hardly believe that I took them. Along the 500 coastal and inland routes, the interaction of coastline , the wild animals, more wild flowers than I could even imagine, it was simply breathtaking. Seeing Zebra graze with cattle made me want to to get my eyes checked though, :-).

Hi Laura,

How nice of you to drop by. Your Mom's loss was such a shock. A trip to the Cape will certainly be something to look forward to. I love it there as well. I am hoping to squeeze a trip in to go back east in July and was thinking to head up that way on a side trip.

Hi Judy, I have heard that. While they can look sweet and passive, they also have a lot of weight to push around. , :-)

Hi Myrl, I got the idea they were fighting over a female. And I am not sure it was ever settled. I observed quite a number of the large elephant seals moulting. That shedding had not occured to me and was very enightening. Check out this guy.

Hi John, Thanks for dropping by. I am guessing here but it would be most likely that they  fighting over a group of females and the right to mate.

Hi Don, Having spent a good bit of time there, the sights and sounds must be music to your ears. It leaves a pretty long lasting impression. The whole area does.

William - neat pic. We stopped by their to see them when we maed our way up the coast a couple of years ago to Big Sur and Monterey. What a wonderful preserve and there were hundreds of seals - or are they sea lions?

Hi Jeff, I think these are all seals. The sea lion differs from the seal in that they have external ear flaps. Sea lions also have longer necks than seals. The seal also has shorter  front fins and the sea lion's front fin is larger. I tried to upload a photo several times and received BAD GATEWAYS each time. What's with that!

Hi Marlene, Thank you. I am not sure who won, LOL. But I think they both might have. The place was certainly big enough to have their pick of territories, :-

Diane, it was only 4 days, but in fact I saw a lifetime of beauty. I have driven the coast before, going to this end (the south)or that end ( the north) . This time was different. I really wanted to see it and I did. Through the new eyes of my camera and that made it very special. I hiked up trails and scaled giant rocks like a teenager, ok at least someone in their 20's or 30's, just to see a waterfall up close and in person or down to the cliff edge. Frankly I didn't know for sure if I could but I did it and had the best time doing it.
