Do You Need Air Conditioning in Your Colorado Springs Home?

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage

Do you need air conditioning in your Colorado Springs home? I get this question a lot when I am working with buyers that are relocating to the area and are not sure of the climate. The answer is it depends- Do you like to sweat? If you do not have air conditioning, chances are that you will be sweating in your home at some point during the summer months.

When I relocated to Colorado Springs almost 10 years ago, my husband picked out the home without me. When we arrived to move in mid-June, the first thing I was trying to figure out in my new home is how to turn the air conditioning on. He broke the news to me that it didn't have it. I think I panicked for a moment until he reassured me that the Realtor said we didn't need it here in Colorado. I am a native Texan so the thought of no A/C worried me, but I went with it.

The first night in our new home we must have awakened 3 to 4 times complaining about how hot we were. After that first miserably hot and sweaty summer,  my husband agreed to install the A/C. Now we use the Air Conditioning in the home from late May-August. We try to be energy efficient and not set it too low, but it certainly helps with quality of life. I must mention that we have a two-story and our bedroom is upstairs. Heat rises, so you can always sleep in the basement for those hot months if you want.

That is what this post is trying to get at.If you don't mind waking up in a pool of sweat for about 2-3 wks. out of the year, then you do not need air conditioning. Yes, you can open windows and that is helpful. However, if you have crazy allergies like I do, you will be sneezing all night long. Attic fans and regular fans can ease the heat as well.

My philosophy is that life is too short to be miserable for about a month out of every year. Summer is my favorite time of year here in Colorado and I would hate to be wishing it away so I could be comfortable. So, yes-I say get the A/C! Or, do like we did and try it for a summer and see how you like to sweat.

It may not be cost effective in a climate where it is infrequently used -- but sure nice to have when you need it!
