Birmingham - The South's Secret

For those of you who have never visited Birmingham and the beautiful state of Alabama, you may be missing out on one America's best kept secrets.  The city of Birmingham, some call it the "Magic City," is surrounded by the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, covered in plush greenery.  A friend of mine from Salt Lake City, on his first visit to Birmingham, said the area reminded him of a national forest.

The Greater Birmingham area is home to over one million residents and if you want to visit gorgeous waterfalls, hiking trails, grandeur mountains and valleys, and crystal clear lakes, you're only one and a half hour drive away.  Or maybe you want to see one of the world's top ten beaches - just a four hour drive to Destin, Florida.  For you Jimmy Buffet fans, you're only four hours away from the great beach town of Gulf Shores.

Birmingham is becoming known for its cosmopolitan feel.  More recently, Birmingham has birthed some of American Idol's best - Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, and Ruben Studdard.  The city is also home to some of America's top medical talent, inside of UAB's medical center.

For those who love to shop, Birmingham is shopping heaven.  Just visit the Summit http://www.thesummitonline.com/birmingham/ or the Riverchase Galleria http://www.riverchasegalleria.com/html/index4.asp , but plan on taking two days to do it - there's a lot to see...and buy.

Want to be entertained and get your trills from a roller coaster ride?  Plan on spending some time at Alabama Aventure theme park http://www.visionland.com/index.html .

For those NASCAR fans, Talladega is only a forty-five minute drive away.  Or better yet, you may want to take in one of the world's most advanced race tracks, Barber Motorsports Park, located right in Birmingham http://www.barbermotorsports.com/ .

Okay, what about living in Birmingham.  If you really want a taste of what some Birmingham neighborhoods look like, check out Liberty Park http://www.libertypark.com/ .

There's a lot of magic going on here.
