Trivia time: Which historical Charlotte neighborhood is the only one named after a woman? Obviously it’s not Myers Park, Plaza Midwood, or even Chantilly…it’s Elizabeth!

That’s right, the Elizabeth neighborhood was named after the founder of the Elizabeth College for women which opened in 1897. Charles B. King was the son in law of Anne Elizabeth Watts, whose husband, Gerard Snowden Watts, a tobacco businessman in Durham. The site of that college is where Presbyterian hospital now stands. If you go to the Elizabeth neighborhood community’s website, you can see a picture of it and imagine what life must have been like back then without all the clutter of so many medical buildings.

Today, the surrounding homes in that neighborhood are as charming as they can possibly be. Some of the structures are divided into condominiums and have been so since days when they were boarding homes, which have now been renovated into brand new luxury residences. Also, several brand new structures have been built over the past few years offering the Elizabeth address with brand new construction. Since there are a great deal of both single family homes and townhome/condos available, I’ll divvy up the posts and focus on houses for now.

Elizabeth is a highly desirable area to live in. The neighborhood itself is home to eclectic restaurants and shops, and it’s only a heartbeat away from the bohemian flavors of the Plaza Midwood neighborhood grills and shops, as well as just moments away from the excitement of Uptown Charlotte. Central Piedmont Community College is part of the Elizabeth neighborhood and it has grown into one of the finest community colleges in the nation. Independence Park is an active place with festivals and live entertainment on a regular basis and Memorial Stadium is within walking distance for the yearly fireworks celebration on the 4th of July. When a neighborhood has this much to offer within just a few miles of its borders, you know you’ve found a gem of a place to live!

Those charming old boarding houses in the area have been renovated into nice new places to live but still have that old style feel. Also, the townhome and condominium communities that have entered the Elizabeth neighborhood have the feel of living in something much more modern but give one the location of old. Next post, we’ll see what they have to offer!
