What to do and Where to Go in Spring Hill Florida: Yalaha German Bakery near Howey in the Hills, Florida
First up, I'm in Bread Heaven! A while ago, a friend told me about Yalaha Bakery as a good source to get German bread in Florida so we decided to check it out.
Starting out from Spring Hill, Florida, and not being in a rush, we took the scenic route enjoying some beautiful Florida back country. The Yalaha Bakery is located on County Road 48 and turned out to be a hot spot on this Saturday!
Entering the bakery was an experience in itself. Based on my German heritage, my taste in German foods and especially bread and baked goods is not that easy to convince and many places specializing in German foods have failed my taste buds.
Not the Yalaha Bakery - this place is fantastic! On a Saturday morning, this place was very busy. I almost felt like I was the last person on the planet coming here. Not to worry, having to wait my turn allowed me to take in the beautiful sights of cakes, pastries, and breads that were presented in front of me.
One lady made a comment about not even wanting to visit Europe as long as she could come here. Well, as far as a German bakery experience is concerned, there is no need. The bakery is arranged just as you would find it over there, the freshly baked breads are presented on open racks allowed to breathe just as you would in a bakery in Germany.
From various "Broetchen" - hard rolls - to wheat, rye and specialty breads, the choices are wonderful. We came home with a two rye breads - a Frankenlaib and a Farmer's Bread - and one German Wheat Bread.
These are some hearty breads, giving the teeth a nice crust to bite before sinking into a soft flavorful center. Try these with butter, smoked ham and a sweet pickle on the side, or complement the robust flavor of the bread with a thick slice of a mild cheese such as Colby, Havarti, or Gouda and you will want for more!
The bakery also has a deli serving breakfast and varying lunch selections such as Bratwurst with German Potato Salad, Sauerkraut, and of course a great piece of bread or a pretzel on the side.
Go back inside to treat yourself for dessert, choose a piece of German Apple Pie, chockful of apples and not too sweet, or a piece of "Bee Sting" (Bienenstich), a very typical German pastry made of Bavarian Creme between two layers of light yeast dough covered in caramelized almond slivers - delicious!
On Saturdays, there is live entertainment outside by the garden patio. Red and white grilled bratwurst was served there as well for those who preferred to stay outdoors.
There are numerous picknick tables but some customers were bringing their own chairs to sit under the shade trees listening to the music in a very inviting and relaxed atmosphere.
Yalaha Bakery - as far as I'm concerned, it's bread heaven in Florida - definitely worth a road trip any time! I know, I'll be back soon!
