Hopkinton DoughboyA Memorial Day Tribute - 2010

The "Doughboy" statue in the center of Hopkinton, Massachusetts stands as a reminder of the sacrifices of all the soldiers who have served this country since Word War I and beyond.

Originally known as "Decoration Day," Memorial Day was  enacted to honor those who served in the Civil War and was later expanded to include all who have died in military service.

This weekend not only marks the beginning of summer but also stands as a tribute to all of our fallen heroes and those who protect us on a regular basis. That includes those who are currently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places around the globe.

I remember immediately following the events of September 11, 2001, many of us were so overwhelmed with a sense of patriotism that we could not find enough sentiment to express it or enough flags to demonstrate it. At the time, a young friend of mine told me that she had never really given any thought to love of country until that week.

Hopefully, we do not have to experience anything similar to those events to remember everyone who has put their own safety at risk to protect all of us.

Along with the grilling, gatherings and day of rest, we need to take a moment to reflect about what this day actually symbolizes.

Happy Memorial Day weekend to all - with gratitude toward so many.

Claudette: Well spoken sentiments.  The generations that lived through 9/11 will have it shaping their experiences for the rest of their lives, just like Pearl Harbor shaped so many experiences in my Mom's life.  She was a child then and still remembers hearing about it on the radio, and the bombs dropped on Japan.  Said it scared her to death.

Chris Ann:

Your mother feels about Pearl Harbor the way I felt about 9/11 - scared to death. I hope we do not have to see anything like either of those events again.  And, I trust that she is well.

Hi, Gerry:

I know that many people share these sentiments whether they have family members who have served or not - we are all grateful.
