Jerry Murphy from Arizona left a comment on my post Featured Blog... Is It Your Best?  that he wrote a quick rant and out of a hundred posts he has it was featured. I went to his post and left a comment.

I guess, he was frustrated with a short sale and thought that Everyone should have to work on commission!  The notion behind is very simple. If the bank employees were paid on commission, we would not have to wait so long.

Well, a rant is a rant. I disagreed with him, I thought it was a very populist idea and I am afraid of populist ideas. Populist ideas are not about doing things right, but about feeling fair… But reading comments one after another made want to scream “What the Heck Are You Talking About?”

There were some suggestions to expand the idea to include government employees, and even IRS.

IRS on Commissions - Jon Zolsky blogWow, that’s something. The whole idea that two sides have the same goals, and being paid on commission would make them both  equally interested in THE SAME RESULT. But who said they have the same goals?

So, let’s play with this idea.

IRS: (oh, you gotta love it) working on a commission base. No deficit, no shortage of the budget, … hmm…no budget, no USA…and we are illegals in Mexico…

Border patrol: No immigrants and the border include all of Mexico and part of China…

Law enforcement: little law and a lot of enforcement… (you can’t pay a commission on the law, but you can pay for every step of enforcing)…

Doctors: Healthier nation (ah, small commission, old schmuck… pass on the patient)…

Social Security Administration: Who said there would not be enough money in 2025? What a BS. There will be not enough customers, just hook SSA with doctors on commission.

US Military: Oops, now we have Pakistan, both Koreas and Russia, great job guys…

Judicial System: Defense wants the client to go home and prosecution wants him to get lethal injection. (Solution: let him go home and then do a lethal injection in the comfort of his own home.)

Banking: strike this out… They are on commissions pay from the government already…

Does it even bother you that the idea comes from Arizona?

I'd like to sidestep the politics of this discussion yet comment on commissions.  I quit shopping at a national ly-known electronics store because their salesmen were paid on commission.  They were way too push, wanting to sell me anything at all regardless of whether it met my needs.  I believe it was a year or two ago that they went belly-up.

Richard - and why I am not surprised. Commission structure implemented without serious consideration can create exactly this. you become the object. The salesmen look not at you, but at your wallet. you will get not what you need and want, but what they would be able to sell.

Jon, I think frustration levels with banks are so high, toss in all the hardships so many are facing, and you have a very volatile and dangerous mix. Sound familiar? It scares the heck out of me. Greed drove the bus right into this mess, and greed will drive us down even further.

Comparing our job, as independent contractors, to the jobs of the hourly employees is just not really feasable. We are totally different.

So, let them rant away, I can let out a great rant occasionally.

Hi Jon, Peter Daniels, A well know Australian Life and Motivational speaker  once commented about commissioned salespeople. He suggested that commissions paid for any service encourages mediocrity, at best. And if you are starting from a point in middle, it is all downhill from there, :-)

Andrea - I saw it as an example of jumping on a polulist idea, and it made me imagine how that could work, and I thought it was hilarious.

I do not understand why everyone is so serious. It is not serious, it is funny...

William - Jerry just wrote a rant, but comments were just illing me. this was hillariously funny, at least that what I thought.

If a little kid asks that all his food is ice-cream, it is normal. When adults around the table start seriously discussing it, it is not normal

Smiling would be normal, why nobody smiles?
