Blogging, I'm no rocket scientist, but I know how to light a fuse.

Blogging...I’m no rocket scientist, but I know how to light a fuse.

  • An effective title can go a long way to attracting your readers. If you make it interesting, fun or attention grabbing you can secure a reader when they other wise may have passed you by.
  • Change the font or the color, to suck in someone scanning and moving on
  • Numbered or Bulleted listing can ensure your points will be made simply and quickly (as most readers only give you a few seconds to convince them).
  • SEO places emphasis on the words used in your title, and can increase your page ranking.

Content...The blogging buzz word we bow to, and know it’s true.

It’s not just what you are saying but the usefulness and uniqueness of your content. I subscribe to many different bloggers, some because they are providing “expert” information on the market, short sales, or creative financing techniques…others I just enjoy reading their post, they have a sense of humor that I find refreshing or even controversial. Some I want information from while others; I enjoy the dialog between reader and writer.

Visual stimulus...You need more than words to keep me interested.

  • Pictures are equal to a thousand words…they are faster than reading and makes your point, be creative, clever or artistic.
  • Empty space is also your friend, allow a breather between points
  • Bold, basic and short, the use of a subheading in a bold font, easy to read words (don’t be pedantic) and concise paragraphs will keep your readers from moving on to the next post.

Attention & call to action…If you just want a reaction from your immediate audience, go in to a dressing room in a busy clothing store and shout you are all out of toilet paper in here.

But if you are blogging to help sell something (whether it is yourself or a product) your post has to meet a need. As I said earlier some blogs I read because I like the writer (this is a favorable connection) others I read for their knowledge of a topic. Both of these types of bloggers I would seek out if I had a real estate transaction that involve their market area…and I suspect a client would do the same.

On one topic…A fat lady gets on a talking scale, the scale says one at a time

I do believe there is a point where you can say too much, introduce too many thoughts and confuse a reader into not responding. So for now I’ll say practice some of these techniques and next time we’ll talk about posting for points vs. blogger burn out.

Here are a couple of my recent post, that attempt to grab attention of the reader and create interest in our Construction side of the General brokerage business,

   The history of Adirondack homes.

   A discussion about remodeling Vs.staging.

Small bites is so important.  If I open a post and see a whole lot of text, I click right back out again.  None of us has the time to devote to such a post.

Blogging is such a journey, we start out knowing nothing about what it is we are doing, then we begin to learn and more and more we get a rhythm going and we start to get better and better. I like you read others posts for a variety of reasons. Thanks for the post I know I am learning all the time, or at least trying to...

Cynthia, Again I'm not a real tech-guy, but I write my posts in Microsoft Word (this offers color and font size) then I go to edit -cut...open "write a blog" in AR, paste it to the body of the post (as a draft) then go back and delete the script-text that comes with transferring the post from word to blog...go back and make it public (or Members only) and post again. Once you do it a few times it is easy. (ps. there are tons of firefox and other software that allows you to write with interesting colors & fonts...beside the M.S. Word program).

Sharon...it seams to be true the medicine goes down when the pill is easier to swallow, The longer the post the more chance you have of losing the reader. I'm not suggesting dumbing it down, just keeping it short.

Gerry, It can be hard to get inspired to write a blog, but some posts come to mind when a client or agent asks me a question and I find answering it is a post.

Steve....most excellent presentation and your point made while doing it. Perhaps you can answer this question and help out a struggling blogger. I copy and paste pictures into a post, but then I am not able to write text adjacent to the pictures resulting in blank space. I can comment above or below, but not to the sides? I notice you do not have that problem. What do you know about this that I do not know?

Thank you

Richie, I write the post (text First) then use the appearance feature in inserting the photos. Play with a post in draft...and delete it after working with the photo sizes, and framing. You really can't work with the text after the photos are added.

Ginny, I have actually found for me It is easier to delete the picture (temporarily) if I want to change the text, then put the picture in after I'm done with the written portion.

Very nicely done, Steve!!!  I read through the comments and I have to say I love ScribeFire as well as your last post about using GMail as an editor - works beautifully.  As for pics, your post not mine, sorry, I can't copy and paste --  they have to be uploaded by me and like you only after text is written.  Um, why isn't this a feature post?

Leesa, I thought now that I have put up close to 1,000 blogs here I semi-have it figured out and will share some of the tips I have learned about blogging, I hope a few folks will get something out of this especially from a guy that didn't start off very tech savvy.

Ginny. I think a lot of people start off opening the "write a blog" feature and you can only do regular or bold text from there, and they add photos using the general picture function (but the appearance function allows much more manipulation of pix) Do a few things in draft mode...publish in draft, then go back and edit to see what you can do with a post. Good Luck!!

Good suggestions.  I need to start doing these.  I usually blog quickly and don't take the time to make it look nice.

Jill, I'm not sure how nice my posts look but they do stand out a bit more, and that can cause a reader to stop by rather than continue past.

Thanks for sharing.  After over 1000 posts you must have it figured out.  Now if your tips work for me, yea.

Seeing by the comments, I'm not alone in my infancy.

Steve ~ some great information.  I have learned a lot.  I never thought about writing in MS and then doing the cut and paste to AR.  I always wondered how others had different fonts and colors.  Mystery solved.

Dawn, If you are looking for a tutorial on how to jazz up your posts, use the search function on the top of the page...and ask - there are some great lessons (prior posts) on this site.
