So Saturday I drove around Yard Sailing with my kids. They love to find treasures (not that we need more junk). I came up on a Moving Sale.
I pull up in my car there is a local Real Estate sign in the yard. We get out and proceed to look around. The man at the sale is obviously having a bad day. He gets snappy and makes uncalled for comments to my kids. I say to try and change things up "How is your sale going?" "Did you sell your home?" . Wrong thing to say! He proceeds to bitch me out about Real Estate and Realtors.
He says Realtors charge too much money and they don't know what they are even doing. Now his house is being foreclosed on. He says that it's all our fault. We just stick the sign in the yard and wait for someone to come along. (I quickly turn to put the kids in the car and realize my car is flagged with Keller Williams Tags!! Yikes) He continues to tell me he lost his job, listed his house 2 months later and that was almost a year ago. Now he has to sell all his belongings and move his wife and 4 kids into a 3 bedroom apt. I apologize and I ask him if he has had alot of showings lately, have they had any open houses, has it been advertised much? He says they haven't had any showings in 2 months, never had an open house and he's not sure about advertising. He says his Realtor told him he wanted too much for the home and it took him out of the market. I then ask him "Is your Home a Short Sale?" He doesn't even know what that is. I proceeded to tell him what a short sale was and he was very appreciative.
I'm pretty sure it's too late for Mr Snappy, but what happened here. I can't help but wonder why the listing agent didn't try for a short sale? She must of known her client was in trouble. Isn't it our due diligence to help our clients no matter what it takes. I left Mr Snappy with a smile and he is going to contact his agent. I understand alot of agents don't like to do short sales and they aren't easy, but hello! I wonder how many more of these stories are out there? I suggest we make sure we know how our listing customers are doing. Keep up with "what's going on" and what they might need from us. I can't tell you how irritated it made me that Mr. Snappy was mad a Realtors in general. The markets not any one's fault dont' get me wrong but this agent could or tried something to help this family, right?
