I grow some hostas here, but they generally don't like it here. It takes a lot of effort, i.e., shade and water, to even get them to grow, and they'll never look anything like their northern relatives.

Russel-I moved to Indiana from Virginia and was determined to grow Azaleas here.  Didn't work.  The plants in Virginia looked like ice cream cones but here they limped along.  Find what likes to grow where you live and enjoy that.  I always find it better and easier to grow with nature and not against it.  You live in one of the most blessed areas for plants-find a substitue for Hosta and enjoy.
