Writer's Block and What To Do About It.

If you are one the many of us who write periodically and you just  landed in the No-Pass Zone , "Writer's Block", here is what you can do about it.

How much can we say about, How to Sell a Home or Buy one, etc.? The truth is, it is an endless subject with some many features , issues, or concerns to consider and write about. REALTORS have been talking about homes for over 100 years and we are still going as strong as the Energizer Bunny.

Buying or selling is not all there is to a home. How about the people that own them, that you helped put there inside those homes. Their lives are also very fascinating and we have all have had some wonderful experiences with them that can be shared.

There is so much more about homes that are fascinating. The communities they are a part of, even the difficulties we all experience owning them. The pleasant things we all know exist inside them. How to build one, How to maintain one.

But what do you do when the words are just not flowing and ideas are stuck in the deepest recesses of the brain.? At least not being able too get the words to flow.

My recommendation is to a take a little break from struggling with the subject and write about " Not Writing". Describe your feelings, your hesitations and or maybe even that you are just tired of writing on the subject and want to write about something else. How about that your brain is being blocked from all the expressive words you know and how at other times the ideas just seem to flow like an open faucet.

A remarkable thing happens as these new ideas  just pop in your mind. Make notes about what just occurred to you. Each of these thoughts will likely become another new article, maybe even a featured post. I would bet that just reading this post will give you at least few new ideas.

If the block continues, do not despair. Get help! Go shopping, drive out to the lake or the ocean or the country side and your mind will be filled with beautiful thoughts of what you are seeing. Go to a movie or the theater. Call a friend and write a story about them. Think about your career, where you are in your life plan and where you would like to be. What's your plan to get there? What's stopping you right now from realizing your own fabulous career?  Others would love to know. These anecdotal stories are You! And as an author of your own journal, your readers would love to know who you are.

Think about your legacy. What if it all just came to an end, what will you be leaving behind.  How many lives have you touched that will have gained from the experience of knowing you. What will your legacy be. (Thank You Woo Hoo Sally for this great idea).

Think about the beauty of all life as it surrounds you. It is always of interest to your readers what you think about, what you dream about, maybe even to your clients to know how you think and what values you have. What drives you?

So when you feel "Brain Dead " and just can't get passed the No-Pass Zone of "Writer's Block", it is time to change your focus. You will be amazed at what comes into your brain and if you will just take a few notes, just jot down a few of your thoughts, you will easily pass through that No-Pass Zone. You will soon be writing with all the zest, great insight and passion you have always had. Try it and you will come to see the many new visions and wonderful fresh new ideas for your journal that were always there and just needed the stimulus to come alive.

Hi Renee, A long Time! How are you? I would guess business in your area has been great, At least I hear it is there.

Isn't it ironic. A few short months ago, ( I started on March 30th) I didn't know what I was doing. I still don't actually, but that can remain between us,lol.

Writer's Block really is just a little shut down. As soon as you or someone you know gives you permission to be in that zone, it all changes right back to where you were. or if an Earthquake happens, whichever comes first, lol.

I have been liberated. I have said a lot and learned a lot but there is way more in there. In fact I don't see the bottom, or at least I hope that is not what I am looking at.

What really helps in this blogging bit is to meet some of the other bloggers. As you quickly realize that everyone is just people and that you are not better or worse than they, it all starts to take shape.

Then of course the brain wants you to keep up and the stuff starts  sticking in the brain and has to be pried off like fried eggs in a non teflon pan. Scrapping is an ugly chore, isn't it.
Then you realize that cereal was you first choice anyway, screw the eggs. Everything is flowing again. :-)

Hi Paula,

I think I still have a ways to go. I signed up for a writing composition class. That should be interesting. On top of blogging I have to learn how to compose too! I have seen some posts that are 3 or 4 lines of non-interesting dribble , no links and no pics and they seem to be getting lots of action. Why am I trying so hard, lol

Hi Paula,I already wrote a message reply and it isn't here, so it may be the 500 error message I keep getting of late. I have had to do so many things over. I must ask about this. It is recent but it ties up the system and when it comes back, all is gone. Oops my message to you showed up after all.

I have been very busy!  Our market is stalled but I have other ways to use my license other than the residential resale market.  You really unclogged my brain and I thank you.  I wish I lived in SD myself and could go to the beach when I needed it.  SD (Pacific Beach) is one of my favorite places to hang.  You are a really great writer and I LOVE your stuff!

Renee, I actually feel the same way about you. I was so totally impressed with your specific knowledge on blogging and you were a model to emulate when I started out. You were so pleasant to converse with and very clear in your guidance. Thank you for that.

I have had some revaluations in this blogging stuff. Most days I am excited about bringing what I can offer for others to partake in. I try and mix it up and do all sorts of things. I learned how to do the research and come up with the topics.

More to what I have discovered is that most people can do this if they dedicate themselves to learning the ways, the html code and how to make changes in it, if not write the html code straight out, just a whole lot of things.

Jim Cronin's  course helped greatly with all that. When it comes to actually writing, it does takes a bit of effort but English 101 will provide similar, if not better in my case.

The overall experience has been a good one but not without some anxiety and not without the sheer amount of time it takes.

As you build your points ( unique here on this site) you get to visually see how you are stacking up. In most other sites, no such measuring device exists like this. But in truth, it is a bit misleading if not greatly misleading. In the process of building up your points, you get this false sense that you are writing interesting stuff and that consumers and professionals alike even like it.

What actually happens is that friendships are formed and there is almost a guaranteed acceptance and confirmation of your skills, ( when often they are not really there at all). Since people earn credit for writing  something to someone and wanting to seem respectable they don't want to  just say, Great Post, Wonderful stuff, , or some such thing. This becomes the reality check instead of a real measure of if we are writing useful things. This is the nature of a social community and we all appreciate being part of one.

But it must also create a false sense of either ability or credibility.

All everyone talks about is search engine this and search engine that , like most understand it and it makes an not an iota of real difference for most because they don't know how to optimize it.

My response to thank you is turning in to a post, lol. Many Thanks for helping me to learn the real truth, not that I am sure I am there yet. But at least I have a safe level of self esteem and didn't automatically think I tuned into a genius overnight because my points have greatly increased, lol. So Many Thanks Renee.

Hi William, great advice re writer's block. In my 20's and early 30's I used to write/produce music for television commercials. I often ran into "composer's block" and the best thing I could do was just to get away from it and come back fresh. It worked 99% of the time... excellent post!

Hello Marti, Thank you so much for commenting. I love your widget. I downloaded it but haven't figured out how to use it as yet. In one of your posts or several actually , it looks so bloody smart. ( those words creep out form my english heritage),lol

It sure helps me, getting away. What actually happens is that I get discouraged and wonder if I should even continue in this quest. Then of curse reason sets in and that is all quickly forgotten with the next post. Real life always proves to be more interesting than fiction,:-)

Hey William, this writers block thing seems to be getting a lot of play lately. Apparently writers block is just an abstract idea with you.

Keep having fun,

I don't know how abstract, but it has become much less of an issue for me when I expanded my thinking that every single one of posts did not have to be only consumer driven. As I lightened my thinking, I realized there was so much more to talk and write about. I once thought that this would be a good forum for teaching consumers what they need to know. I then realized that is not its sole purpose. It can also be entertaining. All part of my growing into this new aspect of my life ( blogging) and finding balance between the serious and not so serious.

Bill,

When I write letters, blogs, etc., I do take break for a hour or so. This definitely clears my mind.
