Bridge Collapse

Bridge

Thanks to the Active Rain members who knew I was traveling last week and alerted me to the disaster at home.  Much appreciated.  It took a few hours to contact my family as the phone circuits were over loaded. It really is a site to behold and hard to beleive.

I had to go see the bridge collapse for myself yesterday.  This is as close as I could get with a camera, but was able to see the entire bridge while I was driving across a nearby bridge.    There are still 8 people missing.

There is a bridge that according to many that is in worse shape than the 35W bridge.  The Lafayette bridge, which is 51 feet high and 3375 feet long.  There are not enough structural supports on the bridge to keep it up if one of the supports goes down.  There are bridges in need of repair through out the state and the country.  Maybe this is our wake up call.

Here are some links to just some of the coverage by some of the great local Minnesota blogs:

That must have been a very surreal feeling.  I pray that everyone will heal from this experience.

What a terrible thing this was.   We have a bridge in New York, the Tappan Zee Bridge, that the powers that be have been talking and talking and talking about for the past few years and I have often thought that if we a catastrophe with a bridge it would be on the Tappan Zee.  It is amazing to me how for years our government discuses the terrible condition and aging of this bridge and it is in constant repair but I don't trust that it is safe.  We are all vulnerable.

Well, all I can say is this is one way to get the decrepit bridges replaced.  It appears to be the only way.

Teresa,

My thoughts & prayers go out to everyone in Minneapolis.  I knew you were in SF for the conference, but my first thoughts when I heard about the tragedy were about your friends & family.  I hope everyone is ok.

Teresa,

When I heard of the collapse I immediately thought of you but I knew you were in California.  I was glad it was not as bad as first reported.  Although there will be some economic impact on the area.   This was also a wake up call for the government officials to focus their attention on the many bridges badly in need of improvement.
