About Clarabelle and How I learned that deer in Glacier View Meadows have no sense of humor

About Clarabelle and How I learned that deer in Glacier View Meadows have no sense of humor.

Iclipart -flowers at garden centerClarabelle "planted" red plastic tulips all along her fence line.

Our crazy eccentric 80 year old landlady, always commented on how pretty her (red plastic) tulips were, and I always agreed - after all, they made her happy.

I loved the way her bright blue eyes sparkled and the way her white hair went every which way on top of her crazy little head.  I also loved listening to her stories from years gone by....

She was so proud of those red plastic tulips! Secretly, I thought she was just plumb loco, but then I was only 20 years old.

Fast forward about 24 years when we first moved to Glacier View Meadows.

After a herd of marauding deer wiped out my beautiful flower pots on our front deck, I bought some silk flowers and shoved them into the dirt in the empty pots.

Crazy Clarabelle crossed my mind at the time, but I laughed it off - it was intended to be a joke.

I called it my fake-iscape.

Now, deer are supposed to have a terrific sense of smell; they can smell things 30 yards away.

.

But when they revisited the deck, they yanked those brightly colored silk flowers out of the pots and promptly spit each one onto the ground.

.

I don't know why they even bothered them -

but I got the message.

Deer may have a terrific sense of smell,

but they have absolutely no sense of humor!

Those evil humorless deer used to tear up anything I planted.....until that fateful day when I sprayed Deer-B-Gone around my flower beds! Now I have the last laugh!

Q. By the way, what do you call a deer with no eyes?

A. No eye deer (no idea)!!!!

That's true Bruce.  We also have a Douglas County where my inlaws used to live.  When my daughter was little she asked if her Grandad was the President. LOL

No eye deer?!!! LOL Craig!  I have no eye deer what might be in Deer-B-Gone, I'm afraid to ask :-)

Hi VB,  You have had a very exciting week, I'm glad you took the time to stop by.

Marking down Team Honeycutt for a whack up side the...OOPS, hello :-D

We live on a beautiful valley that is literally infested with an ever growing population of deer that eat just about anything! There are no natural predators so they are way over populating. Last winter I was sitting at my computer and one walks up and begins munching the HOLLY?!?!? He looked up, noting my glare, shrugged and just game me the "hoof". People unwittingly feed the deer corn that has little or no nutritional value and well...

Dang...

Hi John,  Thank you I try to see the humor in most things, it's a struggle whose those pesky critters eat my flowers though  :-)

Hey Russell, I can only imagine the deer population with no natural predators! EEK  It's too bad they can't be trained to do useful things like only mow the lawn LOL

Hi Dorie,  You're right - those deer just don't know how to take a joke! What a herd of spoiled sports! HAHA!

What are those things on its head? You can tell that I don't have a lot of deer running through my yard. When I lived in Eden Prairie, it was a different story. That's because the suburb took over what was previously land inhabited by wildlife. Wildlife doesn't just disappear. But they do set off motion detector lights at night.

Mary, I have a great idea for your fakescape. Pink flamingos! I'm sure the deer wouldn't bother them:)

Mary - Those are nifty looking photos, with accompanying words.  I would love to see you include the "Photos" group, so I could "feature" it!  You only have 4 groups on this blog now.  You are allowed 5, so no group would be bumped!

Hi Jane, Maybe you are right! "Don't mess with us- we thought you laid out another nice sald bar!"  LOL

Hi Elizabeth, those things on his head are new antlers  ( they look like dog bones now though) HAHA! I know what you mean about setting off the motion lights- ours frequently come on and have to jump up to "see what's out there"...sometimes it is just the wind, though.

Hi Jon, That is an excellent idea!  With my luck I would find out if owls and eagles have a sense of humor that way :-)

Hi Myrl, Only the little buck is my own photograph -- the flowers came from iclipart, which by the way always creates a proxy error when I try to load a photo from iclipart.  But, I should probably not post it to the photos group as if I am claiming the first one to be mine.  Thanks for the "almost feature" Myrl, I appreciate it.

This made me laugh out loud! My Grandparents lived in Wyoming and we spent many of our vacations there over the years. I remember going up Casper Mountain and feeding the deer right out of my hand. (I was probably 22 at the time, I don't think my Grandpa would have taken me there any younger. I was his precious little girl!)  The residents there got tired of the deer rummaging through their yards and trash for food and began feeding them oats and corn. The word got around you could go and watch the beauties, then watching morphed into feeding. They were phenomenal. I did brave the young 10 point buck, he was a little timid, but was so gentle eating from my hand. No one believes my story until I show them the pictures!

That's another one of those "you know you live in the mountains when..." when the only flowers that have a chance are fake. And sometimes THEY have a hard time surviving!

Hi Stephanie, That is such a cool memory!  My sister-in-law feeds them apples, for goodness sake, So naturally they just hang around her place and wait for a tasty snack.  I've read that it is not good to feed them, but I remember seeing a video where campers made breakfast for them and the deer actually came to the picnic table to eat from plates! Thanks for coming by Stephanie!

Hi Lisa, you're right! my fake flowers did not fair too well LOL  Now all the flowers go high on the back deck, where the deer can't get them.  Hope you have a great Sunday, thanks Lisa!

Hi Debra, Isn't it funny how life has a way of turning things around on us?  She was crazy-crazy like a fox! LOL  Thanks Debra, I'm glad you stopped by!
