Ashland Plumber Statue

This is a statue on Pleasant Street in Ashland that, I assume to be advertising for a plumbing company. It stands around ten feet tall and is most imposing on the landscape.

I do not consider myself an advertising genius and perhaps I am being too critical here, but I would not have chosen this particular sculpture to attract business.

What do you think this plumber is smiling at - and, what is coming out of the "plumbing" to make him smile?

And, why do I have to drive by this every day?

Very strange...looks more like someone watering a mushroom.

I have no clue what the heck is going on in that picture! But I would suggest you find a new route to work every day! Protect your sanity before it's too late, Claudette! We need you here!

I have told my son the world is your urinal...I guess that is also true for a 10 foot tall fiberglass plumber

Claudette...

I don't know. It kind of grows on you. But I like Craig's idea of selecting a different route!

John:

I could only hope that it is something as benign as a mushroom.

Craig:

Actually, I work at home, but to get any place in town, I have to go by this thing. What to do?  Thanks for caring...

Ah, Steve. So many men think that way. I do understand.  But does it have to be portrayed like this?

Richard:

I know with your artistic sensibilities that this would not grow on you.  But, thanks so much for the thought.  There are several routes but this is the one that leads to downtown.

It is imposing, tacky and might I add disgusting.  If you ask five people what they see they will all see something different.  I don't see a mushroom, I see something different (not saying).  If you really want to know what it is ask the advertisers.  As suggested find a different route or, bring it up with the city.

Dee:

Thank you for your opinion on this matter. I think I may bring it up with the town and maybe my Active Rain friends can provide me with some ammunition to convince them to have it removed.

Claudette, It's a very strange statue to say the least!  I'd be curious to see if the town has had other complaints.

Strange, indeed - we are being too kind here...

Actually what I think I find most fascinating about it is that it appears to be a carving of an old tree - it looks like both parts are on stumps, right?  So at some point you're bound to have some wood rot set in and it will be gone.  But it might be a while.....

Dee Mayers and I have the same thought...but as the parent of teenagers I see the world as assaulting my babies who in turn spend most of their time snickering at me. I sure would call someone and ask if that sort of signage, statuage, or whatever it might be is actually allowed.

Claudette, I too wondered exactly what tool was coming out of that toilet seat!  Looks a little weird to me!

Hi Claudette:

Well...let's face it....it got your attention!

I guess that was the plumber's angle.

Claudette:  I believe that what is coming out of the toilet is water.  Picture the cartoon likeness of the water spout coming out of a whale.  That's what they are trying to do.  Guess he's smiling because he just unclogged the toilet.  It's totally strange, but definitely gets attention.

Michael:

That is an interesting thought but I don't know if I can wait for this to rot away.

Leslie:

That is part of my thinking on this as well - the kids are seeing this every day. I wonder what they make of it.

Pat:

Weird, indeed.

Toula:

Well, there is that expression that any advertising is good, but I don't know if it applies here.

Chris Ann:

You are also in the "very kind" category. They may well be trying to portray water here but I am not sure that it is completely coming across that way. Perhaps it falls into the abstract category.

Hi Claudette ~ That's nuts!! Unreal.  It's a pretty amazing carving if it really is created from two tree trunks there.  It's rather grusome and who would've thunk that you end up with a toilet and an enormous phallic symbol by the side of the road.  Eeek!! It seems that some plumbers have a bit of a warped sense of humor -  I wish I could remember (actually I don't - I've blocked it from my mind) the incredibly rude and tacky slogan I saw on the side of a plumber's van for all to see.  Where is the sense?

I can't believe that is in someone's front yard!  Maybe after a few weeks it will be moved to a place of business and you won't have to see it anymore.
