  Moving is an Exciting yet Stressful process! All the Planning and Organization, Packing, Labeling and Storing your worldly goods can keep you pre-occupied for months before the big day!

  But don't forget Fido and Fluffy! Moving can be especially Traumatic  for our furry family members.....

  I don't know how it is at your house? But, at mine the minute the maroon travel bags are set on the bed...They Know! We are followed from room to room and we get the guilt inducing "how can you leave us" looks. And that's just for an overnight!

  For your pets....Moving is "gone for the weekend trauma" times 1000.

  Here are some tips for easing that process (for all of you)

                                     *8 MOVING TIPS FOR PETS

  •   Start with your Vet: Discuss how well your pet travels. Your Vet may recommend a mild sedative or nausea preventative.Research the State rules of where you are re-locating. Vaccinations may be required.
  •   Get New ID Tags with your new address: should you and your pet become separated. Have a current photo on hand!
  •   Plan Ahead for Air Travel: Each Airlines has specific rules and regulations you must follow!
  •   Maintain a Normal Routine: Start you pacing weeks in advance to help keep the daily routine as normal as possible. Reduce the Stress!
  •   Train Your Pet to a Carrier: Making your pet comfortable with a carrier can enable you to keep him/her confined safely during the actual moving day reducing the danger of injury or loss. It is also useful as a restraint on a car trip.
  •   Restrain your Pet in Your Car: Use a harness or animal seat belt or carrier. Keep them away from open windows and plan frequent stops for water and "relief" breaks
  •   Find Pet Friendly Lodging: Check in advance and plan your trip around these pet friendly facilities.
  •   Prepare Your New Home: Pack your pets "favorites"...toys, bedding, dishes and treats! Have them unpacked first and put them along with your pet in a confined space until a noticeable comfort level has been reached!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  In general, moving with pets can be accomplished smoothly and with a minimum of trauma...if Planned!
  Dogs are attached to us more that their "space" and adjust rather quickly and calmly as long as their humans ars in sight. ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more Cats can be more of a problem. They on the other hand are attached to their home it is their world especially if they are  usually confined to being inside. Our feline friends must be handled with care.
  Here are some links to some great information on Pet Friendly Travel and special Cat Tips.
  Most of all be Sensitive and Conscious of how this process may be affecting your Pets. Remember.... ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more
Joan, great advice for all of us "pet owners".  In light of the fact that we consider them children, while I experienced the nerves, I felt helpless to reassure them.  THEY HATE CHANGE!  The tips above will help all of us.  Cats...I don't know.  My experience, when I had one, was one great big smelly "marking of territory" in each of her three houses...and my brand new house!  She died at 18, so couldn't have been as traumatized as I was, when seeking to get rid of the smell! :)
Joan -- I think the owner needs some calming meds along with the pets!  Seriously, it is important to stay calm -- breath - do yoga -- pets pick up on our emtions.   I haven't moved with a pet, but I think it would be a challenge -- especially with my cat.  She doesn't like to go in the car.  I wonder if they have a car seat for cats.  Thanks for all tips.
