Do You Hide From the Truth? Or Is it Just Foreign to You?

By
Real Estate Agent with SHAHAR Management

debra walsh real estateThe other day I was sitting in a parking lot prior to an appointment doing paperwork when BAM!  I was rear ended in the parking slot I was in.  After getting over my initial shock I got out and found to my surprise the other person was ignoring me.

After getting their attention which took me a minute or so, I said "You hit me!"  They said "I did not!"  This went back and forth for a moment so I told them to please get out and check out their car embedded in mine.  The person did and said "I didn't do that!"  To sum up a rather long story I told them to please just take care of it and we would be done with the problem.

Their answer was they weren't going to take care of something they didn't do.  So on the phone I went and along came the police.  After they did their investigation and said yes you did do this because they matched up every mark, scratch and bolt (from the license plate) hole from their car to mine this person still said "I did no such thing!"  The person argued with the officer so much so, that he had to scream over them to be quiet, listen to what he was saying and stop denying what was done with the evidence right in front of us.

After this was over and I was going on with my day it got me thinking.  I thought about this person's reaction to the situation and how I handle myself in my real estate business.   Do I ever do things like that?  Do I deny responsibility for something that might have been caused by me?  Do I try and put off on other people things that might have turned out with a negative impact when confronted by a buyer or seller?  Do I talk trash about other Realtors and try to make myself look good above the rest?

I am proud to say that I am able to answer no to those questions because everyday I try
debra walsh real estateand hold myself to a certain standard in my business dealings.  I try to do the best I can always and when I make a mistake (hopefully that doesn't happen too often if at all) I do what I can to rectify it immediately and the first step is always admitting it.

No Realtor should ever speak badly of other Realtors or Brokerages to give themselves an ego boost or to make themselves look good in front of a client.  All you are doing is showing your ignorance.

Debra,

As to your first part, it is quite an experience you had, when people deny the obvious. Wow, and I think you handled it perfectly.

As for the second part of it, I am sure there will the choir to preach to.

For me other agents (and I think agents, not Realtors, is the right word here) have secondary importance. I work for my clients, not for other agents. If they screw up, I am not going to lie to embellish them. I do not think we are here to present the candy view of the profession. We have our share of bad agents...

Since when it is a big secret? (LOL)

Debra.....good one....

Reality to people who live in fear is frightening especially in a crisis..........That being said, I had an opposite experience. I was late to an appointment of the most important nature and rear ended someone in a minor way. I handed them my business card and said call me when you get an estimate and I will send you a check. He said no, I said, look I gotta go. He said no we need to call the police. I said follow me to my appointment and we will settle it. He said no. I said I will then write you a check for $300, but I got go right now. I was begging him.  Now I had his attention. However, he was taken back and still wouldn't commit, but he didn't say no.  To seal the deal, I said, look I trust you. Here is a blank check. Go get your car fixed and fill in the amount and send me the invoice. He broke at that point, refused any money, took my business card, got an estimate, called me and I sent him a check. This is a true story and I bet the tells it to this day....

Hi Debra,

What a challenging story.  It had to have taken a tremendous amount of self control to not lose your cool when the other party was not being truthful.  Kudos to you!

Honesty, although very painful at times, is the best policy!  I appreciate your introspection and making the application to real estate on the importance of honesty and ethical behavior.

Debra, sorry to hear about your experience.  It's frustrating when someone doesn't take responsibility for their actions.  It feels so much better to take the high road in life!

Debra, you were lucky to have the police come in to help point out what had happened.  And you kept your cool in a potentially very heated situation.

What goes around comes around....  One can not fully hide from the truth, it will always surface.

Deb I hope you did not get whiplash that sometime occurs later. Glad it was not worst.

It is hard to believe there was denial of something so obvious.

Now and then we run into a person like that.

Wow, talk about denial.  I can't imagine continuing to deny it, even to the police.  That's crazy.  Nice transference of incident to real estate related blog post....well done!

First of all, I'm glad you weren't hurt. Next, that guy who hit you clearly didn't take responsibility for his actions.

Nice job taking a bad situation, relating it to your work ethic, and finding something positive from it.

Debra.....Your experience with what sounds like a pathelogical liar was very challenging.  I applaud your self control though it all.  I agree that belittling or downgrading others in an attempt to make yourself look better is just wrong and does indeed make you look small.

Debra, Good for you to stay calm and get the situation taken care of. What an idiot that guy was to out-and-out lie about it...this kind of behavior seems to be happening more and more. And regarding speaking badly of other people to build themselves up, it makes the person doing that look inept and unprofessional in my opinion.

What a shock you must have had when you were bumped.  And what shocking behaviour by that bozo.  How can one continue to deny when the evidence is clearly pointed out?

You are lucky though.  Here the police won't attend to private property.  You would have been on your own.

Wow, Debra. You showed great self-control. You could have easily slapped the person upside the head and then said, "I did not hit you!"

As far as complaining about other agents, I realized some time ago that it just makes my clients anxious that things are not going well in the transaction. Then if something goes wrong, they blame the other parties and are less willing to compromise and make it work. So I try to keep all the personal stuff out of it so they can happily believe the other agent is a professional and their clients are nice and reasonable, even when the opposite is true!

Cheers,

Robin

Jon-Thank you for stopping by and commenting and yes you are right!

Richie-Wow I can't believe you were going to hand over a blank check!  Interesting situation....!

Bruce-It was hard because the longer it went on the angrier I got.  However being totally quiet definitely worked to my advantage because they hung themself.  You know the saying...."if you give them enough rope....."

Tamara-I am just glad the policeman believed me because at first I didn't think he was going to.  Thanks for stopping by!

Gloria-One can hope!  :-)

Jennifer-I feel fine-thank you!

Sharon-thank you!  I couldn't believe the continued denial either.  I thought at some point they would give it up so they wouldn't get in trouble for the lie since it was so obvious but nope-right to the end they said they didn't do it.  Go figure!

Craig-Thanks-I am glad not to have been hurt.  It would have rounded out the week-know what I mean?  LOL

Carra-Thanks-also during this tirade this person tried to say I was making up stories, my car was a mess-who could tell it had been hit etc...anyone who knows me knows my car is immaculate.  My car was a mess from the marks they made!  ay yi yi!

Anna-Thank you Mrs. Banana!  My first featured Banana!

Wanda-I totally agree!

Jenny-Wow so what do you do in a case like that??

Robin-OMG I love it!!!!!!!

Robert-Well I have to admit it-I wasn't feeling good that day so that was part of it.  And as I said keeping quiet worked to my benefit in the extreme.

John-Normally I would have too-but now in the future if something like that happens I will try and be calmer and quieter because it worked very well.   :-)
