Last week, I got back from my vacation from San Miguel de Allende.  This beautiful city is located about 250 miles north of Mexico City.  If you read my MeMe a few weeks ago, you know I like travel to different places around the world.  My friend Michael rented house there for the summer because he wanted to get away from the heat in Palm Springs.  He invited all of his friends to come down for a visit, and my turn was July 25th- July 31st.   I think Michael only has one week where he is actually by himself.

As all good vacations must come to end, I had to go to work the next morning.  I attended my weekly Realtor Board meeting, and the guest speaker was Morgan Levine of Desert Adventures.  Morgan Levine is one of the tour guides for Desert Adventures, which is a company that has been providing Jeep eco-tours all over the Coachella Valley for the last 18 years.  She was talking about the different tours available:  The Faultline Express Tour which explores the San Andreas Fault, or the Indian Cultural Tour which takes a fascinating look at the Cahuilla Indians that inhabited the area for hundreds of years.

Then it hit me. In the 8 years I have been living in Palm Springs, and I have never taken this tour.  It made think about all the traveling I have done, the places I have seen, and I don't even know what's in my own town.

How many times have we taken for granted all the wonderful things right in our own little hamlets or metropolis?  There are parks, museums, cultural events, and historical buildings that I am sure that some of us here have not been to.

To be effective Real Estate professionals, we need to be well-versed in negotiations, contracts, and market statistics.  But we also need to be knowledgeable about the events & places that make where we live special.   We need to be able to genuinely tell the consumer why we love living where we do.

Tomorrow, I am going to call Morgan Levine and book a tour with Desert Adventures.  Then I will write a list of all the places I have not gone to, and write about my experiences for Localism.  That leaves me with one last question for all of you,  "What's in Your Backyard?"

The only time I get a chance to do all the tourist stuff is when out-of-town visitors in.  You're right, I need to make it a part of my job to know!!

Nora,

I think we're all guilty of this.  Every city I have ever lived in, I know there have been many places that I have not gone to & experienced.  Then fast-forward 5 years, I still have't done it.

Harold, I live 10 minutes from Washington D.C.  During the spring and summer especially, D.C. is host to throngs of tourists.  Besides the monuments, Capitol, National Mall, there are dozens of wonderful museums, parks, and other attractions, including wonderful restaurants.  Every time I go into the city, I discover something new and wonder why I don't spend more time exploring.  When we have a guest in town who's never visited, we give them the grand tour.  My wife and I make it a point at least twice a year to take "a vacation at home" meaning we explore something in our great city that we've never seen before.  We've even spent a weekend at a bed & breakfast in D.C. (literally 15 minutes from home) and explored around some areas and events we'd never been to before.

I agree that it is very important for Realtors to know what's going on and what is offered in their hometown.

Brian,

I like your idea of taking a "vacation at home".   Taking a little for yourself, but also learning & exploring your city.  Have a great day!!

That Jeep tour sounds awesome. We almost took one in Aruba but ended up renting a jeep and going on our own.  We had a blast!

Sounds like you really enjoyed your vacation!

Harold, you are so right.  A lot of us don't even consider any of the tourist attractions in our own back yards, but it's good to get to know them to give us another perspective of where we live.  Thanks for the idea.....I needed an excuse to go to Vizcaya (again)  : )

Viscaya is an incredible estate in Miami that belonged to James Deering and is not a museum - Here's the link: http://www.vizcayamuseum.org/  If you ever come to Miami, plan to visit, it's breath-taking!
