Golfer's Paradise, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, The Cliffs, Dubai

Years ago people used to say that you could play Golf at one hundred courses within an hour of the Asheville Airport. I haven't heard the count lately, but I can assure you that the last fifteen to twenty years have seen many a new one appear out of the Blue Ridge landscape, with more to come shortly.

The latest and greatest, heard today is that Tiger Woods will design the course at the latest Cliffs project "High Carolina' in Fairview, an eastern suburb of Asheville. He has to date, designed one course, and that was in Dubai. A quick $20,000,000 plus, pay day for this next effort. Good for him, lucky for Buncombe County! Apparently Tiger himself will be in the area to announce the news formally next week.

Walnut Cove, the first Cliffs development in our immediate area (there are a couple more down the road in South Carolina) in a south suburb called Arden, boasts a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that attracts lots of star power for the Pro-Am each year. Kevin Costner always a favorite, and of course "The Golden Bear", Nicklaus, attend all the bustle with their genuine charm and good humor. Mr Nicklaus was paid around $2,000,000 for that course design a few years ago.

If Golf happens to be your thing, let me know, and I will be delighted to get you to the first tee on time!

Kate,

Great write up on the Cliffs.  At some point the area will reach a saturation with too many golf courses.  On the other hand, North Carolina has surpassed FL as the #1 state for retirees.  So, who knows.  The more the merrier.

Thanks Tracy..likewise! Saturation is fairly well here in terms of the land, no more large tracts available that can accomodate Signature Golf Courses...the retirees have slowed ever so slightly, due a bit to the FL market, interestingly enough though, of the 14,000 plus folks moving here this year, the latest growing number is in the 20-26 year olds moving here, approx. 1,500. Cannot imagine what they plan to do for a living as Asheville area is still a service based community, not much industry, although growing.
