Falling Insulation

By
Home Inspector with King of the House Home Inspection, Inc. Home Inspector Lic #207

Inside the crawl space where, typically, the insulation is fiberglass batts under the floor, the inspector often finds insulation that is down.

This is often related to rodent, pest or animal entry -- they like to mess up the insulation. However, it can be related to other factors as well: poorly attached in the first place, damp insulation that is heavy due to evaporation up into it from a wet crawl space, work that was done on plumbing pipes and insulation was never put back up where it belongs.

Sometimes the insulation can be re-installed. Other times it is wet or damaged and has to be replaced.

Steve, wouldn't you just love to plant a camera down there and actually catch the scattering of rodents whent he insulation gave way underneath them?  Something like that would for sure go viral on the internet:)

Interesting thought Charlie!  All us inspectors have motion sensor cameras we leave around in crawl spaces!

Actually that would be a pretty cool video!

Steven - While the video would be "cool," any future buyers would probably look somewhere else : )

The little buggers, should learn to use the walkways! I can get a little claustrophobic when a lot of insulation is knocked down.

Howdy and evenin to ya Steven

I get to see a lot of fallen insulation in crawl spaces in this here area. I was in a crawl space last week, that every bit of the fiberglass batts insulation was hangen down.

Have a good one
Dale
