First Shot for Photography Group- Dall Sheep in Alaska

By
Real Estate Agent with Gabe Swinney

This is my first post specifically to the photographer group.  I wanted to share this picture I took last summer in Alaska.  It was my first expedition of the season, I had camped directly on a ridge about 6ooo' and facing the Alaska Range.  Mt. McKinley occasionally peered out of his shrouded throne as if to check on his outstretched dominion.

The weather held good all night and when I woke my tent was surrounded by six Dall Sheep.  These magnificent creatures peacefully returned the giant mountains gaze and seemed completely ambivalent to my company.  They glowed .

Hey Gabe

That is a very impressive beast.

Every time I see a nature show on TV from Alaska it's cloudy. Was that your experience?

Joe,

Thank you for your comment, parts of AK can spend a lot of time under the clouds especially in the south east,

where in the fall it is not uncommon for it to rain for weeks straight!

In north and central AK however this is not the case and there are many gorgeous sunny days.

Great photo!  How peaceful and content he looks -- he was right near your tent?  Wow!  And... look how clean he is!   Do you suppose he took a bath right before he visited your campsite?  <s>

Do tell us how you shot it.... DSRL?  Really big, long telephoto zoom lens?  Or a little pocket size point-and-shoot?  Thanks for posting this.

Cheryl,

Thank you so much, this one fell right in my lap.  I was using a little cannon powershot A620.  The dall sheep was maybe 15 feet away.  Isn't it amazing how they glow!

GREAT shot!!  Alaska is one of my top destinations although I don't know when I'll get there!  My daughter traveled to New Zealand twice this year. She has some amazing pictures. That's at the top of my list too but Alaska is a lot more "doable." Hope to see more from you.

Your neighbor across the state.
