Census workers will be knocking on the door of 48 million U.S. residencesduring a campaign that began April 30 and will end July 10.

About 635,000 workers have been hired to work across the U.S. and try to find out how many people live at those 48 million addresses that failed to mail back the form to the government.

As of April 2, 48 percent of Hoboken residents had mailed in their forms. The county average is 44 percent and the Jersey City average is 38 percent.

Census workers will make up to six attempts to count possible residents at each address. These attempts could include efforts to contact a neighbor, rental agent, building manager or other person familiar with the housing unit to find out how many people live there.

The 2010 Census is a tally of everyone living in the United States. The count is important for homeowners because the totals are used to apportion Congressional seats to states, including how to distribute more than $400 billion in federal funds, and how to make decisions about services that are offered in different communities.
