As mere children, we learned to the Golden Rule to always do unto others as we would have them do unto us....or something to that affect. However, recently all that we hear about is corporations running rampant with questionable business practices that have almost annihilated the American middle class, governmental back room deals that further diminish our capacity to live the American Dream, and banking practices that are just plain, downright abhorrent (to say the least). Even over the past few weeks, I've been reading real estate blogs that have blasted other agents for business practices that are downright malignant (and sometimes may even be illegal)....and I'm left wondering...what in the world has happened to our golden rule???
As Realtors, we're supposed to hold ourselves to higher standards of professionalism and our first priorities should always be akin to the Hippocratic Oath in that we should do no harm to others. Is this still the case? We're now at a place where deceptive practices are becoming more and more common within the course and scope of some of our businesses. Yet, we're the first ones to yell from the mountaintops that we're professional and ethical....are we really?
At the end of the day, we are only who we are. Luckily for us, we've chosen businesses in which our individual personalities play an integral role in our daily business life. How fortunate are we??? Do we actually realize how many people would kill to have a professional life in which they're able to let those personality traits that they find most favorable impact their businesses in such a major way??? I'm not so sure anymore. I believe in our field and I believe that those individuals who are still working in our industry are here because we truly want to be and we're hell bent on making a difference....and I also believe that we CAN raise the bar on our practices. I strongly believe that if we do what we're supposed to do and how we're supposed to do it, then the money will follow. I guess at the end of the day, all I'm saying is...be good to yourself and better to others.
