Questions to ask yourself before you go out and start looking at houses.

1. Do you have a stable job that you plan to stay at?  Where do want to be in 5 years? If you plan on changing jobs is it going to be in the same area?  Do you have money saved for the down payment & closing cost?

2. Can you afford to own a home?  There are lots of web site out there for you to add your criteria to get your answers but the best thing to do is to sit down with your local Loan Officer and they can tell you what you need to know.  Even if you don't qualify now they will direct you toward your goals of getting the credit or repairing it.

3. Are you responsible enough to take care of a home?  Homes need attention just like a car.  Regular maintenance assures the value and problems from happening.  If you don't have time you will need pay someone else to do it for you.

4. Do you know a good Real Estate Agent that will look our for your best interest?  A good agent will walk you through the process and be with you every step of the way.   If you don't talk to a loan officer first you may be wasting the agents time and efforts if you don't know what you qualify for.

5. Do I really know what is involved in buying a home?  This is not a over night matter, it usually takes a a month or most times longer.  It just may be the biggest investment you make in your life.  Ask a Realtor for a step by step brochure and educate yourself.  There are tons of good web sites online who are filled with information you need to know. Of course there are many questions you need to ask yourself, these are just a few.

This is so true.  So many new buyers just don't understand what is involved with the home buying process.  When you have a REALTOR you can trust the process is much smoother and she/He can help you get qualified and make sure that you are ready to buy a home before you start looking. Great article.

Peggy ~ Thanks and it is not just for new buyers either.  Contracts have changed over the years and they about to do it again in January here in NC.

Dagny ~ It is simple and good place to start out.

Craig ~ I would hate to show houses to folks and they find one they fall in love with but they don't qualify for that price range, then be disappointed in others available that they do.

Leesa ~ Thank you Leesa, I know you are with yours all the way through too.

Hi June, You've got a list of some really good questions buyers should consider asking themselves BEFORE buying a property.  I love the last one, "do you know what is involved in buying a home?"  Great one - that's where an excellent agent can help you with the ins and outs.
