16 Comments on Random Thoughts ... Social Media... Is it becoming today's Junk Mail?
Wow, great food for thought Kathy. I will have to go and read Fred's post. I was actually thinking about writing a post on a siimilar subject.
Many of us are striving for placement on the front pages of Google the organic way. Others are hiring SEO companies to try to make them Number 1. How can everyone be number 1 on the search engines?
Yes it is getting crowded and I think that's what you allude to by the junk mail flyers. But I guess for those looking for a real estate agent or real estate info online this fills their needs.
It really is like collecting the flyers from the mailbox and comparison shopping.
Oops, sorry, I think I just wrote a post here lol.
I do believe there is plently of junk mail in social media but there is so much good informaiton out there. I love that I have connected with old friends and co workers and have an avenue to share inforamtion!
Kristen - there are many sides to social media they include the good the bad and the ugly ..... you have connected with and are using one of the good sides by connecting with old friends etc.
I think this is the nature of the beast. If you look at it, just about every method of communications has started out as pure and pristine, but as time goes on advertisers/spammers find ways to infiltrate their message into the medium. It happened with radio, TV, telephone, fax, cell phones, and now social media. I don't see this changing any time soon, unless our culture changes dramatically. There will be junk in any type of communication we can devise, it's a vicious circle. You just learn to tune it out and pick out the parts that give value and disregard the rest.
Kathy...that video is a "learning experience" for certain. The difference I guess, is that you can THROW away the junk mail received; a tad harder to do so with the "net-junk-items". The speed with which bites or bits or digital images fly around the world & back again is fantastic; makes me glad that I am alive during these times--your brain can't help but spark & shimmer with the all the "input" it receives. I am into SM, but still a hold out on Facebook.

Kathy - interesting approaches, from all 3 of you. I do agree that social media and web marketing are not the same things. Social media was never intended for listing marketing, but rather, some subliminal type of personal marketing, getting readers to perhaps know a little bit about us and be attracted because of some word(s) we used or image(s) we posted. Even blogging is not really intended to market listings but to get people to look at your listings. I do agree, paper is going the way of the dodo bird.
Barb and Sal - LOL "I am into SM" it pays to slow down when I read ..... I read the wrong thing into this and almost deleated it
Mike - agreed some times I think I go too far with my footer that I use on most posts even though I post very few direct real estate posts.
I've seen the video, and think it's one of the best commentaries/presentations of all time. But absolutely agree that the junk mail approach isn't going to work either - it's a very fine line.
Penny - maintaining a balance in what we present only becomes harder as we join new social media sites.
Kathy: Perhaps it has taken the place of door to door sales, and junk mail flyers...but it is easier to turn off and delete and no paper waste or tree sacrificing.
Jane - Hey I Like That I'm Going Green flyers, postcards, just listed / just sold cards
all replaced by
Green Junk Mail
Kathy...I just read your answer to me [us], yikes,I didn't think of the "other" definition of those 2 initials; will never do that again, that is IF I can remember. good thing that I don't claim any knowledge of Social Media right ? right!
At&T is still giving my grief on "bad Gateways" when in the Rain.have a good weekend.

Barb - acronyms and initials mean one thing to the writer but not always the same to the reader.
IE:
WHIMS Intended to be (workplace hazardous information system)
WHIMS (wild harry men in shorts) used by a former construction worker I know to remember the acronym
