San Diego home inspections with Russel Ray: The most damaging bird to your roof
As a home inspector, very rarely am I disappointed when I can't see the roof from the ground.
Remember, that's from a home inspector's perspective.
I'm pretty sure that if I can't see it, being 6'4" tall, very few other people will see it either. If a person can't see the problems on his roof, he's unlikely to do something about them.
If I see Corvus corax birds nearby, I'm 99% certain what kind of damage I'm going to find on the roof.
Don't know what Corvus corax birds are? Sure you do.
They look like this:
Those are common ravens, and then can do a lot of damage to a roof. In my neck of the woods here, they like to pick at the ridge row shingles looking for tasty insects that might be willing to become their meal.
They also are not very good at clearing the table if they bring something home to eat:
We home inspectors have to do everything, and we don't even get a tip. ☺☻☻☺
Common ravens are so common that they exist throughout the world. Part of their success is the fact that they are omnivorous. They'll eat just about anything.
I always recommend that my Clients have their roofs inspected annually, and that recommendation goes double if you regularly see big, black birds hanging out on your roof. Trust me, they are not there just for the view or soak up some rays.
