CARNAC ASKS: How Much Would You Pay to Play on Active Rain???

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Home Team
Carnac of Connecticut

I've seen some weird stuff happening here lately.  There have been way too many nominations for the August "special kind of stupid award".  Unfortunately, I can't link to the posts since most of them have vanished.  But take the now gone El Salsa dude as one example.  He didn't last beyond a few days but as my friend Bob Carney would say...."he's a playa...yo!"  Yesterday a new player arrived on the scene.  I believe he may be the Active Rain's version of a Nigerian Scam.

Ok, here's my next point.  Honestly, I don't get the Active Rain Referral Exchange idea. I've given out a gazillion referrals in my over 30 years in the business and I can't imagine finding a referral agent that way.  Although I don't like the way they are trying to monetize the site,  I believe the Active Rain Gods deserve to make some money.  Not as much as Tiger Woods but a nice chunk of change.  Ok, so they all look like they are only 22 years old - the important thing to remember is they thought of it first.  They brought us all together.

Which brings me to my question - How much would pay to play on Active Rain?  If it actually costs something to be here, do you think it would clean up the place??

DISCLAIMER:  This is not Carnac's monthly prediction post.  Look for that at the end of the month.

(Here is where my neon subscribe to me button should appear but this is much to serious a topic for that.)

Yeah, I'd pay, within reason, of course. There is tremendous value here and worth a monthly subscription. And yes, hopefully, it would limit the less-than-desirables....

Linda, like most everyone else that has commented I would consider paying to play, only because I think that the site would start to return back to being a little more like it use to be.  A fee of any amount would most likely get rid of some of the negative element on here.

It is interesting to see that most commenters so far agree that they would be willing to  pay to play.  I agree.  And I think it would make it a much better place!

I hate to be a contrarian, okay, I don't really mind lol. But, my idea about paying an annual fee was not to weed anyone out. I do however like the idea above about a free three month trial. Sometimes I think it takes people a while to get their feet wet so to speak (well, it is the Rain Puddle after all).  And i like the idea of a lower fee. As Maureen said, she pays 100 or less for an outside blog. I don't think the cost needs to be prohibitive. Heck, 1.5 mil is more than they are making now lol

I have to admit, 30k may be underestimating how many of us there are now I have not checked in quite a while.

Linda - you raise a great question.  Yes, I agree that the AR guys came up with the idea to bring us all together and they should be able to get some compensation for it.  Would I use the referral side of AR?  I've already referred people I've met here on AR because I learned about their character and the way the do business tbrough their blogging.  I haven't actually looked at the AR Referral area of the site yet...too busy blogging I guess.

I don't get the referral thingy either.  I had a lead come in yesterday.  I didn't post it in the referral side but picked up the phone and called something that I researched.

I might pay.  It would depend upon price.

Linda: Check or moneyorder would be fine.  In Danger Bay dollars!!!

Linda, Not sure of the price I would probably pay something...definitely the friendships here are priceless.  I said it before...I think I wouldn't be offended by a few, A FEW, strategically placed advertisement banners relative to the business and location that I am in...  You know, like Title Companies, Marketing Companies, etc.  Sure the Rain Kids deserve the money...I am sure they are making it right now...How not sure, but how do you put a price on the amount of intellectual material on here.

Through our individual contributions, (41,000 +)  we have created an enormous database of industry knowledge, support material for thousands of communities (photos, statistics) and lists of local experts (at least some of us:) )  All which can be marketed by the Rain Kids....should there be a fee on our part, not sure...unless of course we are talking about part owners to this GINORMOUS database and we receive divedends...hmmm

Oh thanks Bob! Now I have to draw Danger Bay money.

Linda: Pay no attention to Bob. Never mind the check or money order--I just need my monthly Carnac fix,

Linda,

I would pay to play, you bet.  Weeding out the people who join, but never post a blog, picture, biography would seem to make AR better.  In California, there are about 30 pages of them.

I needed an agent to refer someone to a few days ago.  I looked at the referral thingy, but instead read through the profiles on AR and picked someone that is using AR the way it is intended.

We'll see what happens,

Where have I been?

I had no idea that there was a "Referral" portal her on AR.  Could be that I have not been searching all over for something "new" to spend time on.  Have been remiss in posting period!

Would I be willing to pay to be a member of AR?  Probably not.  There are other ways to spend my hard earned dollars.  Seems that everyone wants to get in our pockets.  One of the very appealing aspect of AR is that it is free.

There were many skeptics initially.  They felt that AR would be selling its database and a host of other theories.  Now, that it has grown to be a very popular site (there are over 1500 online right now and it's only 0730 on the right coast), is no time to change the direction.

A great place to share ideas and to meet others who are trying to make ends meet in what is currently a very turbulent market.

Great posting (as usual) Linda!

I didn't know there was a referral section either.  But then again, I just learned how to insert links.  Active Rain is definitely worth paying for.  I have learned so much here that is worth paying for...and it has been fun too!

I would certainly pay-to-play, within reason. I think it would improve the content and eliminate the non-participants, thereby improving the value of the site in total. I would much rather do that than have to contend with banner ads!

Regarding the referral portion, I doubt that I'll use it. I prefer to do a personal check of the people and will read their posts to see if they are the quality of person I want to refer.

I am a typical real estate agent. If you told me that I had already paid, I would believe it. When folks mention $50 or $100, well, I have paid that to more things that I did not realize. Now if you ask my wife, you might get a different answer. She has already asked how I could "possibly be affiliated with gayrealtor.com and rednecksforrealestate.net. "

I just shrug my shoulders and say "well,at the time it seemed like a good idea and it was only $49.95 a year." I guess it just means that I am a equal opportunity joiner.

No question.  If this were to go pro, I'd pay to play.  How much?  I don't know.

I am new at this, but really like what is going on. I am encouraging my agents to join and five of them have. If there is a cost, some of them would be reluctant. I probably would not have paid either. Now that I am here, I see a value.
