I saved a fish today!

Yes, I saved a fish from the massive oil spill in the gulf coast today.

Just how did I do that? I got my hair cut.

Okay, so, how, you may ask, did getting my hair cut save a fish?

Well, my favorite hair salon, Marigold Parlour in Raleigh, North Carolina, and it's owner Dustin Smith, are donating all of the hair they cut from their customers to the efforts to clean up the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP Oil spill cleanup

Dustin told me today human hair is one of the best things available to absorb oil from the water.  Instead of just sweeping the hair up after every customer and throwing it away, Marigold Parlour is now saving it in boxes and shipping it to where it is needed to absorb the oil from the BP spill.

So far his salon has shipped 4 big boxes down to the Gulf.  As he was sweeping up my hair, he noted that I gave enough to save one whole fish!

And I thought my hair cut was only about me! What a great thing they're doing, reusing all that "donated" hair to help save the world one snip at a time.

By the way, today Marigold Parlour was voted number 1 hair salon in the Wake County area by the Independent and it's readers!  Congratulations to Dustin and his team for an award well earned.

What a great idea and it doesn't cost anyone anything. Hopefully, the word spreads because they are going to need a lot more hair.

This is a great way to help!  All barber shops & salons should start collecting the hair for this!

That's amazing - I had no idea that hair was being used to absorb the oil! I'll have to check if anyone in my area is doing something similar. Thanks!

Pat- yes, lots and lots of hair! I gave them all I can for at least a couple of months.

John- wouldnl't that be great.  I don't know who thought of this, but maybe the hair salons should organize something.

Mykel- It would be worth it just to ask, maybe the salons don't know about it.

Gabe- don't worry, I gave enough hair for both of us. My hairdresser said he cut more hair from me than what was on his entire head!

Hi Linda, That's very cool!  It's always nice to get a haircut and even better when it goes for a good cause.
