New Trash Collection Schedules and Cans for Indianapolis Residents

Trash Collection in Indianapolis is changing...

If you are a homeowner in Indianapolis, you may or may not be aware of recent changes for many Indianapolis residents, 120,000 to be exact.  The Indianapolis Department of Public Works was given the task of "improving customer service" (my guess is it's an initiative to save money overall) by Mayor Ballard.

Many of you will be receiving (if you haven't already) a 96 gallon trash bin that allows the trucks to pick up the bin without the trash collector picking up bags and cans themselves.  The good thing about this initiative is that residents won't have to pay for these new bins.  The one downside (for elderly or individuals with certain disabilities) to these new MONSTER bins is their size.  My mom had one of these at her last residence and she literally could not get the can out to the curb...They are both very tall and heavy.  I can see this being a problem for some Indianapolis homeowners in the future.

In addition to the new bins, many residents will also be on a new trash collection schedule.  June 7th marked the first day for the new schedule.  If you are new to a neighborhood affected by this change, you may not be aware of this change and/or what your current trash pickup days are.  Find out what your regular and heavy trash pickup days are here.

For Indianapolis residents who are currently being serviced by Waste Management or Republic, this change won't affect you....I'm sure it won't be long before they are pulled into this initiative either.

Indy residents affected by this initiative, how do you feel about the change so far?

I really dont understand how they think with three kids and two adults how one trash can is enough. And then the trash cans are $65 im on a fixed income I dont have the money to buy another one. Some people will end up throwing trash where it shouldnt be thrown. I wont, but some single moms out there wont no what else to do. I just think that we should have the chance to have another trash can for free if your on a fixed income or a single mom.

Hi Shayna, thanks for commenting.  I was under the impression the bins were free...That really isn't right if they are making you pay for it.  I also agree, someone with a large family would have a hard time keeping all the trash in one bin.

I'm not at all happy that we may have to pay for a new trash can since ours has been destroyed. My husband & I are seniors. He's 78 & I'm disabled. I know medicare won't so what are we to do? As it is he has to haul garbage bin to the alley which is quite a walk. This isn't helping seniors at all. Respectfully, Mrs. TB Cox.
