Clutter Clutter on the wall where am I to put you All?

Well here is a problem I think we can all relate to...Clutter!  My home staging councilor & I walked into what seemed to be a collectors Paradise today. This couple had everything from a bearskin rug by the fire place ( in witch we had to move 9 other things to make sure there was a fire place) to every family members picture they ever took and framed it to either hang on the wall or squeeze on any horizontal platform they had in the house.

OK, so as you can imagine the first thing we told the sweet older couple was that were going to have to find a place to store all of your beautiful collectibles, so we can get a 50 gallon jug of Spackle to fill all the holes and paint the maroon walls a more neutral color to open up the space and bring it back from the last century to this one all while smiling and admiring their homes positive aspects.

Well here is where we run into the problem of where are we going to store all this stuff?  The detached garage was full as you can imagine as well as the basement, so we ask did you purchase your new home yet so we can start bringing item over there, and of course the answer was no. OK so do you have any family members who might let us use a part of their garage to store items, and of course the answer was no. OK well I guess we are going to have to rent you a storage space in one of the indoor units if not 2 or 3 units and they would not even think of it. OK NOW WHAT? gur!

We finished our walk through consultation while taking pics and notes and have a 24-48 hour time frame to put together A diy action plan and we are on hour 4. So what would you do in this situation and all those options out for storage?  Time is ticking, tick-tock-tick-tock.

Any and all opinions welcome.

Brian - convincing some people that what are treasures to them is nothing more than distraction to others is very difficult.  Perhaps tell them that it would be much more secure for them to store these things since there will be strangers in the house and something might get broken.  That might work to at least get some of the photos and knick knacks off the shelves.  Maybe bring in an organizer and have them put everything in labeled tubs?  Clutter never looks as bad when it's in blue Rubbermaid tubs with labels on the front of them.  :)

Are there PODS in your area?  My sellers use them all the time.  Quite handy and they just deliver the pod to the new house.

PODS? At least it saves them a step in moving.  They are probably overwhelmed at the throught of moving.  Maybe it's time to start parting with the collectibles and parsing them out to the kids.  Do they really want to take all this with them?  Will it fit? Give them some time (even overnight) and go back and unless someone else has a solution then see if they will reconsider - maybe their emotions have calmed down.

I did mention PODS to them, but I didn't have a brochure with me to explain more about PODS, so we are sending a runner back with info on PODS to them in the morning.

Thank you Julia, that's why I love AR, there are nice people still out there.  Just hard to find them sometimes in bigger citys.

I would talk to their children and tell them to have an honest discussion with their parents.  Something like this-  Mom, Dad, lets get rid of all this crap.  When you die we are just going to throw it all away anyway  :)

Good luck!

This is a difficult situation because it needs to go - some somewhere else and the rest a permanent some where else. Explain the situation to them and then do the best you can. Make sure that they understand that they are probably giving up money by keeping the stuff there and in the way.
