This post should be titled, "It Was Only A Matter Of Time."

internet advertising by categoryOnline Media Daily is reporting this:
"Spending on Internet advertising will reach $61.98 Billion, and will surpass newspapers to become the nation's leading ad medium in 2011."

This is according to projections by the private equity firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson.

That was destined to happen. It was only a matter of time. What is perhaps more interesting in the report, however, is the consumer move to digital media away from traditional media. For the first time since 1997, there was a per capita decrease in the amount of time people spent with media. This is a result of the YouTube, less is more, phenomenon.

What do you think the fastest growing ad category will be?

That's right. "Blog, Podcast and RSS advertising is projected to reach $1.138 billion by 2011, registering the fastest growth rate."

Gary... I picked up a newspaper for the first time in over a year a few weeks ago - because it was outside my hotel room door.

Amazing when you think about it like this and the fact that the 'internet' itself is still FREE, we simply pay a service provider to access it.

Katrina... television used to be free as well, now most of us pay for cable or satellite. It will be very interesting to watch where this leads.

I can find more information from more sources online. Why would I read a paper? If I don't read a paper I am not seeing the ads. No need to advertise to no one! Times are changing and we need to keep up or move out of the way of those that will. I have always tried to stay ahead of the curve.

Jeff another great post.  I can't say I am sad for the newspapers they have been shoveling their views for too long rather than reporting the facts.  I want news not their biased views thanks.  We will have to work hard to stay on top with this medium but I think as the dust settles many of our prospective clients will see the light in doing searches for people specializing in their specific areas.

Jonathon... the full article and study has some information you'll want to have in your arsenal.

Darrel... user generated content is hard to ignore. I do think "channels" will form that will add a layer of "credibility" to those who prove themselves to be trusted. It's work today to sort out what is truth and what is make believe when it comes to blog reporting.

I'm told that my hometown newspaper, The Washington Post, is making money on its web site ads, though not with print ads.    This  is probably becoming the case all over the country!

Thanks Jeff - I rarely advertise in print lately and concentrate all my efforts on the web.  I have bookmarked this and will be using it in my listing presentations to support all the internet presence I create when I list their property.

Missy.. I am as well.

Patricia... it's not too late for newspapers to wake up and understand that their content is what has value.

Aziz... yes it does.

great news story today about internet ad spending...

the british govt has been buying ads on social networking sites

they've just pulled their ads off Facebook which uses a random rotater because the gov't's non-partisan ad was showing up on the right-wing party's facebook profile

myspace and bebo have given them assurances that it won't happen on their sites... facebook hasn't...

and... get this... the british gov't is the largest advertising budget in the UK... I guess brand names like Virgin don't need ads?

With all these new stats about how fast the internet is growing, it puzzles me to see most real estate professionals don't blogs or don't even read blogs! How fast can you kill your future if you don't get on with the times?

Cheers,

Cindy

Jeff, good post.  I laugh at the money getting grabbed from other agents' pockets when I browse through the newspaper classifieds or the local home magazines.  It's really agents advertising to other agents, because I rarely see consumers looking at those publications.  They find me online.

Jeff,

I too will be utilizing this post on listing presentations with folks that still want to advertise in the local newspapers.  We must focus our resources (both) time and money in areas that are most effective.  Based on these forecasts, and the work I've seen you do as well as the knowledge you possess, I'd have to say that your future is looking very bright!  Of course with a name like Turner, I'd expect nothing less!!

Happy New Year from Toledo, Ohio!
